Garden Events at Texas Discovery Gardens Dallas TX
Fair Park in Dallas, Tx is much more than a place to see Big Tex and the Cotton Bowl. It is also the home of Texas Discovery Gardens. Texas Discovery Gardens, at Fair Park is a place to attend garden events any time of the year, but especially in February, when garden events can be hard to come by.
Educational Garden Events at Texas Discovery Gardens
According to their website Texas Discovery Gardens mission is “To teach effective ways to restore, conserve and preserve nature in the urban environment, with a focus on gardening organically and sustainable.”
Using garden events, the people there educate visitors on both basic and advanced garden topics. Theirs is an on going garden events program that includes both outdoor gardening topics as well as large and beautiful Butterfly House. Yes, Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium features 500 free-flying tropical butterflies and 60 species of tropical plants.
Garden Events in the Near Future
One event I am looking forward to is scheduled Saturday, Feb. 19, 11 am to Noon. Garden Walk: Bug Hunt. At that time, you can join a guided garden tour with John Watts the ‘Bug Guy’,and discover something you might not have even thought of: hidden insect life during the winter. This event is appropriate for ages 3 and up, so bring your kids!
Another garden event I don’t want to miss is on Saturday, Feb 19, 9 am to Noon. It is titled: Victory Gardens Workshop: Discover the Art of Vegetable Gardening. Although I am already an experienced gardener, they will cover hands on summer gardening topics just in time to begin work on my summer garden. There is a charge, but well worth it.
In the past they have given lessons on pruning roses, and in March will be offering instruction on water conservation planning and maintenance, composting and butterfly gardening.
Hours of Operation and Admission Price
Texas Discovery Gardens is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. And on Tuesday, the gardens are open for free, giving you a chance to discover the Discovery Gardens and preview where their garden events will take place. Note though, that the Butterfly House admission remains regular price even on Tuesdays. One look at it will give you a sense of the value of that admission price, though!
Price of admission ranges from the full price of $8 regular admission per person down to free for under 3. Admission is also free to members, something to consider if you are much into gardening or butterflies. Some events are extra, such as the Victory Garden Workshop I hope to attend.
