Gabrielle Giffords, Democratic congresswoman from Arizona, was shot by Jared Lee Loughner Saturday morning. Congresswoman Giffords had just begun a meeting with a gathering of constituents outside a Safeway store when Jared Lee Loughner struck. Witnesses said he walked calmly up to Mrs Giffords and fired at point blank range. Doctors said the bullet went “through and through.” Loughner then proceeded to fire 15 to 20 rounds into the crowed as they attempted to flee. It is reported that there are 6 dead and 12 wounded – a nine year old girl among the dead.
As expected, the left has already begun to try and hang the actions of this murderer about the neck of conservatives. As Matt Lewis reports on his “Politics Daily,”
Almost immediately after the nation learned of the shooting of Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and several others (including a federal judge), a few prominent liberal web writers sought to blame Sarah Palin and other conservatives for the action.
Linking to a map of U.S. House districts that Sarah Palin’s pac wanted to “target” during the 2010 mid-term elections — which sadly included crosshairs over Rep. Giffords’ district (among others) — DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas Tweeted, “Mission accomplished, Sarah Palin.”
The liberal blog Firedog Lake also went there.
(Palin has deleted the image from her website, and issued a short statement on the shooting, writing on her Facebook page: “My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.”
Liberal blogger Matthew Yglesias Tweeted out several other examples of “violent rhetoric,”including Rep. Michele Bachman saying, “I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous” to block climate change legislation.
To be blunt, this is absurd. Especially in light of the fact that Jared Lee Loughner is described by a friend as ” left wing, quite liberal.”
The fact is, there has been far more violence perpetrated in this country by “domestic terrorists” on the left than by those who claim to be on the right. Think Weather Underground, Black Panthers and so on. Moreover, those who are portrayed as being right wing – like Timothy McVeigh – are not truly of the right since the right eschews terrorist violence by definition.
Moreover, this tragedy did not result because of “lax gun laws.” Mexico – for instance – has a total gun ban and yet they have the worst record in the western hemisphere for killed and kidnapped politicians. There are more than 28,000 dead in Mexico because of the ongoing drug wars; that alone is proof that if guns are outlawed, then only outlaws will have guns .
Regardless of Jared Lee Loughner’s reason for the shooting our thoughts should be turned toward Gabrielle Gifffords and the others who have suffered in this horrific event.
The bottom line is that his is an act of a mad man. His politics are not really relevant. To argue about politics at a time like this belittles the pain and suffering of the victims and their loved ones. Let’s keep our focus where it belongs.
