Television has taken over our lives to the extent that the average person spends hours each day planted in front of the tube. In many ways, we all have forgotten there are plenty of things to do instead of watching TV. In fact, to get the most out of life you will need to step away from that soap opera to truly experience the world.
Do you need some ideas other than watching TV? Here are some things you could be doing instead:
GO OUT TO EAT
Going out to eat doesn’t have to be a glutton-fest; in fact, going out to eat can be very relaxing, intimate or just plain fun. For a few dollars at your favorite restaurant or eatery, you can spend hours talking to friends, family or loved ones about any number of subjects. Getting outside, away from the TV, will help you gain a better grasp on what’s actually happening in the world and not just in the fictional ones displayed through shows.
READ A BOOK
How many times has someone told you to read a book instead? But really, reading a book can be a great escape that not only improves you mind but gives you many new experiences that can’t be found on television. If you’re reading non-fiction, you could learn a new skill or the history of a far off culture. If you stick to fiction, you will dive into a world more expansive than any show or movie can recreate. The best yet: most TV shows and movies use books as the basis so why not go ahead and hear it from the source!
GET SOME EXERCISE
It’s a no-brainer that if you watch television all day you’re going to pack on the pounds. It’s difficult to get up and exercise but there are many great benefits other than just losing weight. Building a good habit out of exercising will give you additional energy to do other things in life and can be used to socialize with others if you join a gym or exercise with others.
START A BUSINESS
The hours upon hours you’ve watched of infomercials has only done one thing: make you say “I could have invented that!” Well, why don’t you?! Instead of watching TV, you could spend all those extra hours to start your own business. Starting your own business is not only exciting but will give you additional money to go do more enjoyable things in life.
SPEND TIME WITH FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVED ONES
The hours your pour into the TV could be used to spend time with others. We only have a finite amount of time on Earth so you have to ask yourself “what’s better, the people I love or watching people on TV”. Getting out with others and spending time with them will help build better relationships and can be far more entertaining than even the best TV show.
SURF THE NET
Unlike television, the web is a platform for interaction. Because TV is passive while you watch the shows and movies, you aren’t doing much otherwise. The net, on the other hand, allows you to talk to others, learn new skills, discover a hobby and do just about anything you want (within a legal limit). The net, by far, gives you a much larger choice of entertainment than simply watching TV.
GET A HOBBY
Hobbies are fun! If you already have a hobby or plan to start one, the time you invest toward it will always feel good. If all you’re doing is watching TV, it never really feels like you’ve created something amazing. A hobby lets you learn and expand your mind as you go deeper into the obsession with whatever you like to do. In fact, your hobby could even turn into a business!
Writing is a very freeing activity. All those thoughts you have in your head can finally find a place on paper or on the computer. It feels great to be able to say “I wrote that” instead of “I watched that”. When writing, you become more exposed to the variances of life and, over time, can improve your understanding of language, information and how to interact with others.
EXPLORE THE WORLD
There’s so much to the world that’s right at our finger tips. If we’re sitting on the couch all day only passively watching the world around us, we never get to experience it. Regardless of finances, there are thousands of new places and people to discover even in your own town. Going globally, you could spend your entire life exploring and still don’t come close to seeing it all.
As you can see, there are plenty of other things to do than watching TV. It’s unfortunate that so much television is dedicated to negative images which, in turn, create a negative mentality toward much of life – just look at the news! Instead of wasting time in-front of the tube, get out there and experience life, remember that there are other things to do than just watching television.
