Before Smackdown officially began, footage of last week drama between Edge/Kelly Kelly and Dolph/Vicki. It also showed what led Vicki Guerrero to fire (storyline) Kelly Kelly from the WWE.
Smackdown took place tonight in Green Bay, the home of the recent Super Bowl Champions. The crowd was very energetic after their team recently capturing an NFL Title. It was immediately announced that Dolph Ziggler would face Edge for the World Title, with Vicki Guerrero as the special ref. This match would serve as the main event.
Opening Segment: The ring had a Valentine’s Day vibe to it with roses, red carpet and etc. Alberto Del Rio’s ring announcer was in the ring, and he began to announce Del Rio’s name and etc, as Del Rio drove up in style like he usually does. Del Rio seems to be doing a great job as a heel in the WWE. As Del Rio made his entrance to the ring, he drew plenty of heat from the fans. They began to air some footage of the current feud between Del Rio and Kofi Kingston that occurred the previous week. It pretty much gave away why Del Rio came down to the ring. Del Rio began talking about his destiny and he claimed that love was in his heart. He also bragged about his current and future success in the WWE.
While Rio was doing his promo, the camera focused on the Green Bay Packers in the crowd watching the event. Clay Matthews, the outstanding linebacker for the Packers was the most notable player among the several in attendance at Smackdown. Del Rio angered the crowd by verbally assaulting Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. Del Rio said the he will become World Champion at Wrestlemania 27. Kofi Kingston interrupted Del Rio’s promo after he said those words above. Kofi slowly walked down the entrance ramp, and he looked very pissed to the least about his facial expression. Just to get this out the way, the crowd chanted “GO PACK!!! GO” throughout the entire telecast literally. My theory is when the show became boring to certain fans at certain moments; they began to chant the catchphrase.
Kofi dismissed Del Rio’s claims of destiny talk, and desired to exact revenge from Del Rio. Kofi reached under the ring and grabbed a kendo stick. He slid in the ring with it, as Del Rio begged without any shame for Kofi not to hit him with the stick. Kofi deceived everyone including me because he acted as he would not hit Alberto. Then he swung for the fences with the kendo stick, landing four or five great shots on Del Rio. Remember the Valentine setup in the ring? He used the kendo stick to destroy the entire setup. Del Rio retreated and looked very embarrassed after what happened.
Match #1: As a result of what happened, Kofi faced Del Rio in a one on one matchup. Both guys displayed aggression against each other, making it a great match. Kofi attempted the Trouble In Paradise, but Del Rio exited the ring. Kofi followed him and Del Rio threw is arm in to the steel step and took advantage of Kofi’s hurt arm. Del Rio has been working on that arm since last week, so Kofi immediately favored it when Del Rio punished it. Del Rio won the match by throwing Kofi into the ring and performing that armbar to make Kofi tap. Alberto put his stamp on it, by refusing to stop performing the submission after Kofi tapped out. WWE may be rushing Del Rio to the top too fast, but this guy is a great heel nonetheless.
Backstage Interview: Todd Grisham conducted an interview with World Heavyweight Champion Edge. Edge insulted Vicki/Doph Ziggler and I was shocked by the next event that occurred. Grisham asked Edge how he would retain his title tonight, and Edge answered with “I have no idea.” Then Edge stared at his title with a nervous unsure look on his face. The old heel Edge seemed to always have some sort of Ace up his sleeve. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Edge doesn’t have a idea.
Camera focuses on Green Backers again as Clay and the other guys held up their replica World Titles.
Match #2: Vladimir Koslov made his way to the ring with Santino, and this was not a tag match. The match was Vladimir versus Justin Gabriel of The Corre. Gabriel may his way to the ring with the other Corre members. The three members (Wade, Heath, and Ezekiel) each stood in one section of the ring surrounding it like they always do to create fear. Koslov created some offense, but with The Corre getting involved made it harder for him to win the match. At one point Vladimir was attempting a maneuver, and outside the ring, Heath Slater pulled his leg to stop him. Santino went over to Slater and performed The Cobra to Slater. Gabriel slid Santino and he crashed into the barricade. Gabriel got back in the ring and quickly won the match with that crushing 450 splash. After the win Wade put Santino in the ring and performed Wastleland on Morella. Ezekiel Jackson picked up Vladimir and basically did the rock bottom to Koslov. It was also announced that Wade would face Rey Mysterio later on tonight in a one on one match.
Match #3: Chris Masters vs. Drew McIntyre in a one on one matchup. Right as the bell rung and the guys were to do battle with each other, Drew slid out the ring. He grabbed a microphone and blamed Edge for Kelly Kelly getting fired. Drew also said that he will never forget how Edge got her fired. It sounded like a threat to me, and dedicated his match to Kelly Kelly. Drew finally got in the ring, and Masters went to town on Drew. He executed this amazing sit-out powerbomb (D’lo Brown’s Old Finisher) and impressed everyone with his strength. Shortly Masters attempted another manever, and Drew countered it with the Future Shock DDT for the win.
Match #4: Wade Barrett vs. Rey Mysterio was the next one on match. Wade made his way to the ring alone without The Corre surprisingly. Wade got a mic and reminded everyone that he would be in Smackdown’s Chamber Match at the PPV. He also reminded everyone of The Corre’s dominance, and stated The Corre had no leader in the group. He made a threat against Mysterio by saying that Mysterio is apart of the plan whether he knows it or not. The match began with Wade totally dominating Mysterio and showing those underrated wrestling skills he has. Rey gained some ground and attempted a move from the top rope, but Wade countered it and put Mysterio into the tree of woe on the turnbuckle. Wade stomped a mudhole into Rey until the ref had to force Wade to stop. Wade dominance against Rey in the ring began once again.
The match moved outside and Wade slammed Rey against the barricade, and it looked very effective. The match moved back to the ring, and Wade was dominating big time. Rey made a comeback and looked to win the match, but Justin Gabriel of The Corre interfered causing Wade to take advantage and win the match.
After the match, The Corre had plans of punishing Rey, but Big Show made the save. Show attempted to fight them all of, but Jackson got the best of him. The Corre delivered a series of punches and stomps to Big Show, punishing kicks and stomps. Ezekiel Jackson picked up Big Show and slammed him once again.
Match # 5: Kane vs. JTG in a squash match (my personal opinion). He completely destroyed JTG for a quick win.
Backstage: Laycool whined and complained about Eve Torres becoming the new Divas Champion. They ran into Vicki and the acting GM expressed her disappointment in them. Dolph appeared behind Vicki and said some bad things about Layla and Vicki/Dolph walked away. Layla was disappointed with Michelle for not sticking up for her.
Match #6: Layla went one on one against Diva Champion Eve Torres. Right after the bell rung, Layla got out the ring and began to talk to Michelle Mccool. She repeated to her that she cant be successful without her and Layla looked like she had no confidence whatsoever. She demanded Michelle’s support. Eve interrupted Layla by grabbing her and slamming her on the announcement table. The match ended quickly with Eve earning a quick pinfall to win the match. Laycool will be breaking up very soon, according to my analyis from the situation. Michelle seems to be very selfish about her career in the WWE, and seems like she doesn’t want to carry Layla anymore.
Match# 7: Edge and Dolph had a see saw matchup. Both guys were executing great moves and giving out plenty of punishment. Edge had plenty of opportunities to win the match, but Vicki was being very unfair with her officiating. Vicki even attempted to Spear her ex-husband, but suffered an injury while attempting the Spear. Edge wasn’t even close to being hurt and was shocked she tried it. Vicki was attended to outside the ring by WWE trainers. Edge hit two spears in a row on Dolph Ziggler, but no ref was present to make the count. Suddenly, Clay Mattews run down the ramp and makes the count so Edge can retain his title. Both give celebrate in the ring to end the show. Vicki was on ringside calling for Edge to be DQ’ed and lose his title, but the other refs were present and told her it couldn’t happen.
