Communities across the country offer free arts and craft projects for all ages. Some arts and crafts supply stores, home improvement stores, and libraries offer free kids craft events as well as some free adult events.
Free Kids Crafts at a Library Near You
Many libraries offer free arts and class projects for children. Since libraries have their own budgets and programs these will vary across the country. Check with your local library to see if they offer kids programs. Often libraries in large cities offer arts and crafts projects for all ages from toddlers to teens. Some projects have included making a wallet with duct tape, holiday crafts, and a craft based on a specific book.
Michaels Free Kids’ Craft Events
Michaels is an arts and crafts hobby store with locations across the country. In their weekly ad they a promote the events that are happening each week in all stores. These include free events as well as those that require an in-store purchase. The free events are noted in the listed as “free,” and the others project events have the notation “with purchase of ____,” depending on the item to be purchased for the craft being made.
Around holidays Michaels offers free kids events like hand puppets that children can decorate for Valentine’s day. Each week’s advertisement lists the free events. Some weeks there is more than one free kids craft project available, so be sure to look at all of the event listings.
Some Michaels stores also offer free demonstrations on how to do or make a specific thing, like candy making, in their stores. These demonstrations are usually sponsored and shown by representatives of the company that sells the supplies.
Michaels Free Adult Events
Adults love to craft as much as kids. Michaels stores have an extensive list of events being held with the store location, whether it’s a free event or a paid class. A good way to try a new craft is to attend one of their free events to get a feel for what is involved. It’s good to know what the cost is and if the techniques are something you’ll enjoy doing before spending money on the complete supplies.
Free crop nights are held at Michaels for scrap book lovers to attend as well as paid classes on using certain techniques and equipment in scrap booking. Often classes held at Michaels are run by professionals in the field and are offered at a reduced rate when held at Michaels.
Home Depot Kids Workshop
The first Saturday of each month Home Depot stores hold a free kids workshop. Each month a different project kit is provided to each child free of charge. Some past projects have included a pencil box, mail organizer, bird house, and a heart shelf for Valentine’s day.
Tools are available for the children use and each child receives a free orange apron. They learn skills such as safety, using tools like hammers, and patience.
Home Depot Adult Home Improver Club
Home Depot wants you to go to their workshops then buy their products. That’s understandable, but it’s still nice to get some instruction for free. Recent projects covered at Home Depot included faux painting techniques, knowing the right tools to use for each job, and bath makeover workshops.
Get More for Less
If the store offers a coupon, be sure to take it along. Each week Michaels offers a store coupon in their weekly ad. This is usually good for 40 percent off one regularly priced item for sale in the store. If something is on sale, you can’t use the coupon for that item. The 40 percent off coupons are great for when you want to buy another larger type item like a pasta machine for polymer clay crafting that will help in your crafting pursuits. After learning about a craft, you might need that coupon. Be sure to read the coupon for exclusions.
