The first release of the movie “Forks Over Knives” outside of a major metropolitan area was premiered in State College, Pennsylvania. The event took place January 19, 2011 at the State Theatre located at 130 W. College Avenue, centrally located in downtown State College. “Forks Over Knives” takes its audience on an emotional, yet enlightening journey explaining why the United States and much of the world is slowly becoming consumed by chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. “Forks Over Knives” then goes on to share many scientifically based, rationally constructed arguments pertaining to how a whole foods, plant-based diet can remedy many of these conditions.
Before the onset of the film, dinner was offered for 50 guests whose meals were comprised of entirely whole foods, plant-based ingredients. This only seemed to add to the excitement and anticipation of what was to come. Many of the audience members seemed quite familiar with the scientific rationale behind many of the arguments in “Forks Over Knives” and were able to anticipate the discussion of these concepts in the film before it was viewed. In the State Theatre lobby, many of the theatre’s sponsors and supporters gave away free items including health-related literature and even fruits and vegetables.
The atmosphere at the onset of this premier was one of energy and excitement. Before the film began, Harry Zimbler, the newly appointed Executive Director of the State Theater, took center stage to welcome the sold-out crowd to the event. Zimbler was humbled by the enthusiasm of the audience and the amount of guests that were present for the premier of “Forks Over Knives.” Many people cheered as the opinion was offered that “Forks Over Knives” would considerably change the way many Americans perceived their current diets and the state of health in this country.
Throughout the film bursts of laughter spread throughout the theatre during some of the more ironic portions of “Forks Over Knives,” while anguish seemingly filled the air as the film depicted individual instances of patients suffering from obesity and the associated chronic conditions. From the very beginning of the film, there was a sense that audience members were easily able to empathize with the message of desperation the filmmakers were trying to convey as this country faces a future of seemingly endless health problems.
“Forks Over Knives” truly had a very inspirational feel. It conveyed a message of motivation, self-worth, and compassion. It offered ideas for healthy living and answers for chronic health conditions in what is portrayed in the film as truly desperate times.
