New medical study reveals startling association between belly fat and osteoporosis
Retaining belly fat for a long time was believed to actually aide in the prevention of osteoporosis. Now revealed in a new study having that extra belly fat may actually bring about the disease. Levels of high belly fat could just possibly harm bone health and add to the risk of developing this bone weakening disease.
Findings of the study have shown visceral fat aka belly fat, the fat which is found between organs and abdominal cavity is linked to a reduction in bone mineral density in obese women. In comparison other type of fat under the skin and in different areas of the body referred to as subcutaneous fat has no proven link.
Researcher Dr. Miriam Bledella, radiologist with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston stated this study was shocking, due to the fact women who are obese at thirty should have normal bones.
Low density of minerals in the bones is noted to add to the risk for osteoporosis.
Obesity brings more bad news states Dr. Bledella, the one good thing that obesity brought was protection of bone loss but in actuality this is not necessarily the case.
Bad verses good
Previous studies that had examined obesity and its effects on bone health did not determine between the two kinds of body fat. Underweight women were acknowledged to have an added risk for osteoporosis. It had just been believed that the more you weighed the more bone health you had.
Dr. Bledella and associates examined bone mineral density and BMI (body mass index) of fifty obese women average age of thirty.
All of the women had a CT scan to measure bone loss and a MR had been used to gauge the amount of body fat in the marrow of their bones. Both scans centered their attention on the lumbar section of the spine, an area of the lower back which is viewed as a good indicator of bone mineral density and bone marrow fat in other areas of the body. Belly fat of all women was also measured.
The association
Overall, the more belly fat women had, the lower the bone density. None of the women had osteoporosis however, bone mineral density was below normal indicating they had the condition known as osteopenia, which can lead to osteoporosis.
Obese women had more belly fat along with more fat in their bone marrow. Dr. Bledella states that this does suggest fat in bones makes them weaker.
Researcher still are not clear why belly fat particularly has this effect. It could be because this fat produces particular hormones and other substances that harm bones.
These findings when added to a mounting amount of work advocates that belly fat is worse for your body than other fat found in different areas of the body. Past studies have associated belly fat to an added risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
