Many of us spend a lifetime living with that nagging feeling that there is something more, but never quite build the courage or confidence to ask for what we need. For some it stems from being raised to think that asking for what they want is a sign of weakness or that polite people never ask.
The assumption, of course, is that those around us will see our wants and needs and willingly go out of their way to provide it. It is the basis of the age old statement, “If you loved me you would…” The truth is, to get what you want in life; sometimes you need to ask. If you don’t ask, you will always be settling for whatever you get and that may not be what you want.
Asking Clarifies Your Wants and Needs
Asking for what we want or need in life forces us to look closely at what we really want. Too often we spend our lives wanting more, but not really knowing what that more is. If we aren’t sure what it is we want in life, or what we want or need from others, they certainly cannot know.
Asking Lets People Know What You Really Want
It’s human nature to assume those around us already know what we want and need–but that is rarely the case. Family and friends can’t read your mind. If you are like most people, you’ve probably developed the habit of responding to others by implying it doesn’t really matter what you get. Consider the times when your spouse has asked where you’d like to go for dinner or what movie you’d like to see and you replied, “It doesn’t matter. You Choose.” It does matter. You matter. But, until you learn to tell others what you want, they may never know.
Asking Puts the Responsibility on You Where It Belongs
You may have yourself fooled into thinking that not asking for what you need or want from others is being considerate. It Isn’t. Expecting them to read your mind and magically meeting your needs puts all the responsibility on them. Give them a break . Let them know what you really want and put the responsibility back on you where it belongs.
Asking Opens the Door to Receiving
You may not always get what you ask for, but it opens the door to receiving. When you are specific in your desires, whether you are asking your spouse for more help around the house or looking for backing with your new project, asking for what you need allows others to provide assistance.
Asking For What You Need Activates the Law of Attraction
According to proponents of Law of Attraction, getting clear on what you really want and need, and taking action by asking for it, activates the Law of Abundance. This creates a flow of positive energy into your life and allows you to manifest abundance in all areas of your life.
Whether you believe in the Law of Attraction, or simply want to improve the quality of your life, asking for what you need is a step in the right direction. It forces you to clarify your wants and needs, allows others the opportunity to provide those wants and improves communication. So go ahead. Identify your real needs and wants and ask away. You may be surprised by what you get.
