Five Guys is a fairly new chain in our area. It isn’t fancy and there are no frills. The restaurant is red and white. It’s tile, tables and stacks of potatoes and barrels of peanuts. You don’t go to Five Guys for the atmosphere, you go because the hamburgers are so great.
You can order other items, but everyone wants the hamburger. It is well done, but it’s juicy. How do they do it? The bun is buttered and then toasted. Wow! That is impressive. It really makes the sandwich stay together better besides giving it lots of additional flavor.
When you order, you add your own special variety of toppings. There isn’t a charge for any of them and you can add as many or few as you like. This isn’t just lettuce, mayo, tomato and pickle. Not by a long shot. The free toppings include all those items but also mushrooms, green peppers, grilled onions, Jalapeno peppers and relish, bacon as well. You can add A-1 Steak Sauce or bar B Q sauce or even hot sauce when you order. All free.
My burger was grilled onions and mushrooms, bacon, lettuce and tomato and they were piled so high I could hardly open wide enough to eat it. A gentle squeeze over the wrapper to catch drips and I was a goner. The most delicious burger I have ever tasted.
But wait. I also had an order of small fries to go with the burger. They were in a cup that was approx a 12 oz size but piled so high that they overflowed into the bag, enough to fill the cup again and maybe twice. They were freshly made from real potatoes. You knew that for sure because bags of potatoes were stacked out in the dining area. A sign also proclaimed the name of the exact farm in Idaho where the potatoes that they were cooking today were from. Amazing.
The meal was cooked to order. We munched on free peanuts while waiting. We continued to eat peanuts during the meal and even took some home.
A little tip for you when you go: Buy a small drink, the refills are free. Also buy fries to share.
The crew was having a blast cooking for the crowd. They called out the orders by announcing the “lucky number” of the order ready to be picked up! They were all smiles, busy cooking and talking to the crowd, it was a fun wait.
We had five different orders and I suspected it would be a difficult time sorting them out, but not so. We had a receipt with each hamburger order and each was given a number. The burgers were wrapped with the correct number on top. Easy as pie. There were not mistakes.
The dining area was kept clean by crew members, tables wiped, floor swept and we were asked if they could get us anything when the passed by. More napkins? Ketchup? Refill? What a great place!
