Find Space for Your Stuff in a Small House or Apartment
If you live in a small house or apartment you may be having trouble finding space for all of the things you own. You may have to be creative when it comes to storage and organization when you live in a small space. Sometimes it takes a lot of thought before you can find the perfect place for every item you own.
Get Rid of Some of Your Things
First of all, you have to face the fact that you may have to part with a few of your things. Ask yourself if you really need it. If you have not used it or worn it in a very long time you probably should just donate it to charity so someone else can have it that truly needs it. You can also have a yard sale and make some money for your savings account. Eventually you will forget all about the stuff you got rid of and it will be like you never even owned it in the first place. I try to tell myself that I am selfish if I keep things I really do not need and that really helps me part with stuff easier.
Utilize Every Space You Have
Using the space under your bed can really help you keep things out of view if you put a bed skirt on your bed. Then you can not see underneath it. No one will know if there is anything under the bed or not. Make sure you keep everything organized under there by using plastic containers that you can easy pull out from under the bed when you need something. You do not want to just shove everything under there in a hurry. You can even find cloth shoe organizer that will fit perfectly under the bed so you will not have to deal with a ton of messy shoes in the bottom of your closet any more. Another place that you may have never thought of as storage space is behind your sofa. If you have any space behind your sofa you can place small storage containers behind it as long as you have other furniture such as a couple of end tables to hide the storage containers on the sides.
Buy Shelves and Furniture with Room for Storage
End tables and coffee tables that have room inside for storage are also a great idea if you need all the storage space you can get. When you are purchasing any kind of furniture remember you live in a small place so try to buy the smallest pieces of furniture you can find and afford. Putting shelves on your walls will add more free space on the ground. This will make the room look bigger opposed to having all of your stuff cramped against the wall on the floor making less space to walk around. If you live in an apartment and your landlord does not allow you to put shelves on your walls you can buy very tall book shelves and place them against the walls for a similar effect. Just because it is a book shelf does not mean you have to use it for books, you put anything you want on it that will fit. They are great for kitchens that do not have enough cupboard space. You can arrange boxes and cans of food nicely on them or place your kitchen appliances and dishes on them. You can find reasonably priced book shelves in many stores, so you will not have to spend much money to get organized. Do not forget to look for book shelves and other furniture at thrift stores and yard sales. You might get a great bargain and a priceless antique.
