Vacations near home are all the rage now, and for good reason. Staying close to home lets us learn more about our area, save money, and still have a good time. For a great destination near much of the Northeast United States, consider a visit to the Finger Lakes in New York.
The Finger Lakes region encompasses more than 9000 square miles, according to the tourism website. With that much area, you know that there will be an abundance of natural wonders, activities, and interesting sites. The entire family will find something they love about the Finger Lakes.
Wineries and More
For connoisseurs, the Finger Lakes area is filled with opportunities for tastings and discovery. It boasts more than 100 wineries, from Aurora to Watkins Glen. In fact, a newspaper is published quarterly promoting the goings-on of the wine industry there. Check out the Finger Lakes Wine Gazette for more information about special events, reviews, and the wineries themselves.
Beer drinkers don’t despair; the Finger Lakes region is home to a number of breweries. Knock back a pint of tasty microbrew at the source. Make a visit, too, to one of the distilleries of the area.
Expect grand beauty as you explore the natural marvels of the area. Bike or hike to get up close and personal with nature. Take the family on a visit to a nature center. Even golf has a home here.
Of course, it would be a shame to not get out on the water. Eleven Finger Lakes offer amazing chances for water activities. None of the lakes are man-made. I recommend a boat tour to learn even more about the history of the region. Or try fishing, canoeing, or kayaking to infuse your vacation with the aquatic.
The Finger Lakes region is rich in history. For instance, the women’s right movement began right in the Seneca Falls area. The Underground Railroad also had stations in this section of the country. With so much of American history having been born right here, it warrants a visit to the area’s museums.
Spend some time, too, in a regional art museum and learn more about the vibrant creativity of the people of the Finger Lakes. There are more than 135 museums, so you will never be bored exploring them.
Expect to eat well while visiting the Finger Lakes on your next trip. Chefs of the region work wonders with locally produced and sourced ingredients and innovative techniques. They create amazing food that sparkles alongside the wines of the area.
Consider, too, picking up your own local ingredients at a farmers’ market or shop to build a picnic. Add a bottle of local wine, and you have a perfect meal alongside a lake in the making. Bring an appetite.
