It is bad enough that our mailboxes are full of bills. Do they really need to be full of junk mail too? Well, the answer to that is no.
What about our homes? When the mail comes in all that junk is set aside in a pile to go through. Sometimes we get to it and other times it piles up and becomes a muddle of clutter.
Even if you take that extra time to separate all those envelopes. There is still a stack of unwanted papers. Now you have to shred the parts that have your name on them. Then add the stack to the recycling box. Eventually, that box or container has to be carried out to the street for the city recycling truck to pick up in the morning each month. And, finally once the papers are picked up you still have to bring the container back into the house or garage.
You have heard of the “do-not-call” phone number? Offered by the National Do Not Call Registry . The one where you can add, either or both of your home and cell phone numbers to their list that prevents telemarketers from calling you day and night. By the way, that number is 1-888-382-1222 .
Well now there is an organization called the Direct Marketing Association that does the same thing for your junk mail. The “do-not-mail list” will rid you of tons of unwanted junk mail that have been cluttering up your mailbox, desk, kitchen counter, coffee table or office.
It is a one step process!
All you have to do is write a letter or postcard with your name, home address and signature to:
Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association

All companies that are members of the DMA must remove your name and address from their mailing lists. This process is quick and easy. Within three months of sending your letter the junk mail will start to decrease. In the next few months it will diminish tremendously.
If there are a few stragglers that still find their way to your mail box there is something else that can be done. These items are making it to your mailbox because they are not a member of the DMA . For these few companies you have to either call or write them to have your name and address removed individually.
Now catalogs are another story!
These are usually the most bothersome around the holidays. Everyone and his Uncle is mailing a catalog for this and for that. Half of them are from companies you have never even heard of. You can take care of this two in just two easy steps.
The first is pretty cut and dry. Call the toll free number on each catalog and tell them you want to be taken off their mailing list. This will stop future catalogs from that company from showing up in your mailbox. Before you hang up with that customer service representative don’t forget to tell them one last crucial statement. And that is, to nicely ask them not to sell or rent your name and address to other businesses.
Then write a simple note to Abacus Alliance to have your name and address removed from the main mailing list for the catalog industry. You also have the option of emailing them your note along with your name and address to be removed from future mailings.

The Winona Post Office may not like this idea because that is less mail going through their hubs. Not only that; less bulk postage will be required. But we can be pretty sure that the postal employees that actually deliver the mail will be appreciative not to be lugging all those heavy catalogs around.
So whether you live in Winona, Mississippi or any other state across the U.S. these options are there for everyone to partake in if they choose to.
Write your two short letters today and get your home mailbox back under control. Note: There is a petition via the internet to stop junk mail. This petition is collecting signatures online for form a Do Not Mail Registry similar to the one we use for phone calls. The petition is located on their website called, “Do Not Mail” . Just click on the words Do Not Mail to be redirected.
