Elizabeth Edwards’ funeral is under way right now. However, the Elizabeth Edwards funeral isn’t just about celebrating the late, beloved woman. The Westboro Baptist Church is claiming that support of homosexuals killed her, and is loudly stating that message outside. They are two blocks from the church, while counter protesters are striking back across the street. Yet beyond them, the Elizabeth Edwards funeral is going on to actually honor the late icon.
The Edwards’ first rose to fame and power in North Carolina, before they made a bigger mark nationally – for vastly different reasons. While John was tarnished for his extramarital scandals, Elizabeth was given support through that ordeal, and for her battle with cancer.
At 1 pm, the Elizabeth Edwards funeral began to honor her one last time, at the Edenton Street Methodist Church in Raleigh. The service is open to the public, as 1,700 mourners are expected to be in attendance. John Kerry, who brought John into the 2004 Presidential ticket, is among those in the crowd, along with Ted Kennedy’s widow, Vicky.
Edwards’ daughter, Cate, will be among the speakers during the service, although John is not slated to speak. The event is also open to media cameras, but the service will turn private once Elizabeth is laid to rest.
Outside of the Elizabeth Edwards funeral, the Westboro Baptist Church is injecting their own take on things. Once more, Fred Phelps and his congregation are using the death of a major figure to protest a pro-homosexuality agenda. As always, they cite God for this noteworthy death, as part of His alleged punishment of America for tolerating gays.
Yet for the most part, the focus is actually on the dead, and in celebrating her life. After enduring the death of her young son, the national spotlight, scandal, and two battles with cancer, she was finally at peace a few days ago. Today, she is officially laid to rest, as her legacy carries on.
Before today’s service, reports spread about how she spent her final days. They were in the company of her family, as her three children were with her right to the end. Even John was there to say goodbye, in spite of how things ended between them.
After the Elizabeth Edwards funeral ends, she will fittingly be laid next to her son, Wade, who died in an car accident 14 years ago. All donations in Elizabeth’s name are being sent to Wade’s foundation, which was formed to help fellow gifted kids.
