It can be difficult to get ahead in your career without leaving behind your life at home. If you have a hard time getting a good balance between your family life at home and your career, than it’s important that you learn how to keep a good balance so one never tops the other.
Your work and your life at home shouldn’t be equal. One does need to top the other, it’s just important that you make sure it’s the right one that is topping the other. You can’t let your career run your life, so of course it should be your life over your job.
What’s really important to you?
First you need to think about what is really important in your life and why it is you want to maintain a good work-life balance. Are you feeling that you are missing your children growing up or you miss your husband or wife than you should? Well than you know you are spending too much time away from home.
Whether or not you enjoy your job, it’s probably very important that you keep it and become successful so you can provide for your family and make sure that everyone’s needs are met, but it’s also important that your family knows you love them and that they can count on you. But it is possible to get your work done while still keeping a good life at home.
Talk to your boss.
If you feel your boss is putting to much work and stress on you, than it’s important that you talk to your boss about working less so you can make more time for your life outside of work. And just a reminder, working at home is still working so it doesn’t matter if your boss suggests you work at home more. So you shouldn’t:
-Check your emails at home.
-Talk to your boss all the time about certain projects at home.
-Take your work home with you.
-Don’t take any breaks during the workday so you actually get your work done so you can go home earlier.
Plan time for yourself.
It’s important that you take time every week to do what you want to do, even if that’s not spending time with your family or friends. Take advantage of this time to do anything you feel like doing, this way you can wind down from all the hard work. If you have a family and you feel guilty that you don’t see them often than it’s important that you spend this time with your family.
What don’t you need to do?
If you have a lot of work that you need to do and you don’t have much time for things you’d ACTUALLY like to do, than you need to get rid of activities and events that you don’t really need to do such as going to your second cousins aunt’s wedding reception.. You hardly know this person so do you really need to be there? No. Keep in mind that you need to tell people no sometimes so you can make time for what you really need to do and for what you really care about.
