It almost seems like an oxymoron – how could a place specializing in food to go possibly offer anything even resembling healthy food? Well, okay, it is Chinese cuisine, which is inherently healthier than American fast food. Still, it’s hard to believe that something could be fast and good for you. It’s even harder to believe that food which is fast and good for you could possibly also taste good. Nevertheless, Good Taste Chinese Carry-Out manages to provide all three.
My family has been ordering from Good Taste for years. They recognize us when we call now, and yet they don’t take us for granted. The food we get today is as good and as plentiful as the food we got when we first started ordering. We have certain dishes that we like best and order most often, but we’ve also never been disappointed when we tried something new. The place has always been perfectly clean when we arrive to pick up the food, and the service is outstanding every single time. I don’t think we’ve ever actually eaten in the restaurant, and yet we still get 5-star service while ordering and picking up our food.
While Good Taste is not exactly a health food restaurant, the restaurant is very interested in providing healthy dining, as part of the philosophy of the people who own and run the place. They do everything possible to ensure that the meals they serve are as healthy as possible.
Of course, some of the items on the menu are healthier than others. As a Chinese restaurant, Good Taste certainly has to offer all the classics the public expects. Of course, nothing on the menu is especially unhealthy; Chinese cuisine is a very healthy cuisine by nature. Chinese cuisine focuses on vegetables and uses healthy sauces to flavor the food. Chinese cuisine favors healthier cooking methods such as stir frying and steaming. Even so, some menu choices are still healthier than others.
The Good Taste printed menu highlights and points out which options are healthier than other options. For example, right on the front page, under the restaurant’s name, the menu proclaims “healthy brown rice available” – reminding us that the white rice Americans tend to prefer, and which we associate with Chinese restaurants, actually isn’t the best choice. Good Taste will serve you white rice if you wish, of course, but they remind you that brown rice is better. Likewise, the menu highlights Good Taste’s healthiest menu items in a special “Healthful Choice” section.
It may not seem like much at first glance, but today’s American lifestyle is not overly conducive to eating well. People care more about picking up food on the way home than they do about the quality of this food. Chinese cuisine in carry-out style manages to blend the American need for convenience with the human need to eat the foods that nourish our bodies. Good Taste takes it to another level, however, by directing our attention to the simple things we can do to eat better and then making those choices as simple and convenient as ordering them from a take-out menu.
I highly recommend Good Taste for food that is both healthy and delicious. You will find them at 277 S. Van Dorn Street in Alexandria, VA. Their phone number is 703-751-9300. Order your favorite Chinese dish with brown rice. You won’t be disappointed.
