The earthquake in New Zealand measured fairly high on the scales. Still, the earthquake in New Zealand just got up to a 6.3, which makes it trail the 7.1 quake back in September. However, it has caused just as much damage, as the death toll is already up fairly high. In fact, with many more trapped under the rubble, the rush is on to keep the body count from getting higher. So far, the earthquake in New Zealand has killed 65, with hundreds more fighting for their lives.
Back in September, the nation was hit by a quake that reached 7.1 on the scales. As such, the newest tremor is considered an aftershock from that incident, although it happened over five months ago. Now, the city of Christchurch is cleaning up the damage once again.
The new earthquake is reported to be even more destructive than the one from September. 65 people have already been counted dead, and is expected to rise over the next few days. The efforts to keep that from happening will be difficult, since hundreds are said to be trapped under rubble.
According to the New Zealand Herald, more than 100 people combined are trapped under the ruins of six sites, with fears that the death toll may reach the hundreds. It would challenge the most deadly quake in the nation’s history, when 256 people died in Hawke’s Bay in 1931, after a 7.9 hit.
Having another earthquake in New Zealand is the worst thing imaginable for the country, considering their recent history. It took almost half a year for Christchurch and the other affected regions to recover from last fall’s incident. But already, the recovery from this one stands to be even more difficult.
This was an imperfect storm of disaster, as the tremors reportedly began at 12:51 p.m. local time, when countless workers, shoppers and children were outside. That alone makes this quake even worse than the one that started it all months ago.
While this latest earthquake is devastating, the death toll still pales in comparison to others in recent years. Last year’s tragedy in Haiti killed over 220,000, as did the 2004 quake and tsunami. Although Christchurch has been a center for geological damage lately, they are not in such deadly zones like this.
Nevertheless, the earthquake has left Christchurch in ruins, and left dozens of its citizens dead or fighting for survival. Updates on the death toll, and the efforts to clear the rubble, will come later today.
