Even though Earth Day is once a year, it is fitting that it takes place in the middle of spring. It seems the most Alive of all the seasons, with organisms waking up from their winter slumber, or returning from warmer parts of the world. Flowers bloom with every creek of the neck, the rain feeds the sweet smell of pine trees, and everywhere life is evident. What a great time to appreciate all the Earth has to offer!
But if we take just one day out of the year to appreciate all the natural beauty and life around us, what are we doing with the rest of those 364 days? Are we admiring the world as often as we should be? Is Earth Day just a day to plant trees, or a day to start thinking about how we interact with the environment and how we treat it? If it’s an annual time to get together and do something good for the Earth in mass quantities, then it succeeds! But in the other sense, we should be in awe, and appreciate every single day what is here for us. Too many people just don’t do anything after Earth Day and go back to their normal lives. In this time, people are too worried about things that are irrelevant outside of the Natural World. They need to make the joy of living complex with money, all-inclusive hotels, expensive fine dining, a new SUV plus the oil and carbon emissions that come with it, clothes that are made inhumanely, and back to jobs where they become zombies and repeatedly do the same thing every day. That’s not good for people at all. It’s not good for the Earth at all. Yet how many people do you know who are associated, not with just any one of those things, but they base their lives around artificial, man-made, well, everything! We are just about all guilty of that, but it’s never, ever too late to change what you’re doing.
Appreciate the Earth every day. We humans have one thing that makes us different than all other animals. The human brain. All other animals are struggling to survive and reproduce, but we are so evolved that we have time to use our brain to it’s full potential. That doesn’t make us better than any other living thing, we just are lucky enough to admire everything else. We are the only living things that can APPRECIATE something, LOVE something. Make our life worth living. We show it in art, in relationships with people and the land. If we can marvel at what the world has to offer, why do we continue to destroy it and turn it into unnecessary things that do Nothing to help continue Life on Earth? We are all born to die, and how do we want to leave the Earth when we are gone? Have it littered with all the bullshit that we have created, all the stuff that will NOT matter when we are gone. What will matter when we are gone is that Earth will still be here. Life will continue to go on without us, just like it did before, so it makes sense to enjoy and respect what the world has to offer to us while we are here. Plus what goes around comes around; if we take care of the Earth it will take care of us, that simple. No shit, right?
Let every day be Earth Day. Start changing the way you live for the Earth, it’s life, and us. Bust out the bicycle for transportation, you’ll get fit and have fun going places. You won’t have to depend on oil thousands of mile away. Eat food that is actually FOOD, grown so it could provide you with the nutrients and energy you need to live. Food that is not processed and turned into basically nothing, and then not shipped thousands of miles. Think of all the time, money, and oil goes into that! Plus what is better than enjoying FRESH food? Get out and ADVENTURE! It doesn’t need to be far, have you traced every square inch of your town? What about the forest outside town? Admire the tree and how it grew so tall, not what you can make with it. It’s a living thing, like you. Think of a pastime that you can pass on to others, share with people. Learn to play music, another wonderful gift of the human mind. What’s more exciting than hearing a good story? Become a good storyteller, share with people your experiences, your triumphs and struggles. Learn to work with Nature, start a native garden, a flower garden, a vegetable garden. When we experience new things, we get inspired, we want to do more, to LIVE.
Start Living. Let Earth Day, be Every Day
