“Apprentice” reality tv star and real estate tycoon Donald Trump has begun speaking publicly about his possible Presidential campaign in 2012. The brash celebrity is not shy to criticize those with whom he disagrees, and one person he disagrees with is fellow Republican Ron Paul.
At CPAC last Thursday, Donald Trump told conservatives that Ron Paul could not possible be elected as President. Ron Paul, who went on to win the CPAC straw poll, defended himself on MSNBC this morning, saying, “I was elected 11 times and somebody said, ‘Well, how many times has Donald Trump been elected?'” [Source: Newell, Jim. “Donald Trump Has Made an Enemy of Ron Paul,” Gawker, 2/14/11. The easy reply to Ron Paul is: “Yes, but you’ve never been elected President, despite trying your hardest in 2008.” And, whether he is a viable Presidential candidate or not, Donald Trump at least has the sense of judgment to know that Ron Paul cannot possible win a general election for the Presidency. Winning a conservative straw poll simply does not guarantee success at appealing to independent voters.
At CPAC, Donald Trump also announced that June would be his cutoff date for announcing whether or not he will run for President. While we can be certain that Ron Paul will have another go at being elected President, it is still unclear whether Donald Trump will run. Last month, he told Newsmax that one of his primary reasons for considering a Presidential campaign is his disgust with President Barack Obama’s economic policies toward China. And here is one other certainty: Donald Trump’s feud with Ron Paul is only the first of many. Trump is not going to be diplomatic and soft-spoken. You can be certain that in the coming months, he will tell each and every major contender for the Republic Presidential nomination exactly what’s wrong with them.
