Over the years, my dad and I have gone several places and enjoyed fishing and hunting. We haven’t always been successful but it has always been memorable.
When I was a little kid I remember my dad taking me fishing in Palacios, TX. with my uncle. We would have lots of fun catching fish and I think that those experiences fueled my love of fishing as I got older.
One of the neat things we enjoying doing as a family is going down to Galveston, TX and renting a beach house. We like to rent one that backs up to a canal or the bay. This way we can just walk out the back door and start fishing. We have done this for many years now and we always seem to catch plenty of fish and have a great time doing it. If you look around and do your homework sometimes you can find good deals. One year we found a house where the owner let us use their jet ski. So when the fishing got slow we would hop on the jet ski for a couple of hours.
Also, in Galveston you can go down to Pier 19 and get on a bay fishing boat or deep-sea fishing boat. My dad and I have done both many times. We have been with a few people and with many people in our party. The great thing about the party boat is that they furnish everything and put you directly on top of the fish. So you almost never go home without catching something. You might not catch any keepers, but you will catch fish and have a great time.
As for as hunting in Texas there are so many options. I am only a novice hunter but over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed hunting in Bandera, Texas. The hill country of Texas is beautiful and full of wildlife. There are many ranches that offer hunts for white tail deer, axis, black buck antelope, fallow, hogs, and more. Plus you can always go into downtown Bandera and enjoy the shopping, and local restaurants. There is also a rodeo during certain times of the year.
If you would like to hunt elk in Texas then head over to Cleveland, Texas and visit the Cullen Ranch. They not only have elk, but they also have white-tail deer, fallow, hogs, axis, ducks, doves, and more. The accomodations at the Cullen Ranch are first class, from the bathrooms full of marble and granite to the wool carpet in the bedrooms, to the personal chef that cooks your meals. Then to sit out on the back porch that over looks the pool and an 8 acre pond is the best way to cap off a great day of hunting.
While, there are plenty of places to go and enjoy the outdoors with dad this winter in Texas I hope you have enjoyed some of my favorites.
