Gaming at Home
Gaming at home is rampart with this generation. With the advent of multiple gaming systems and an enormous range of games, most kids would rather be gaming at home than being actively fit. Looking at ESRB ratings on games is a great way to limit violent content. You can control what your children are playing.
Online Gaming
Online gaming is a different world. Games are not rated by content, but some require approval from a parent’s email account before activation. Take the time to look at the online game site that your child is interested in. Discuss the values that are taught and why it is okay or not to play.
Online Surfing
Online surfing opens a whole new world to young and older children. Software is available to filter search results to keep kids safe while surfing. It is amazing to see a child search results for a well known children’s celebrity to see that some search results are definitely not kid friendly.
Limited Time and Access
One way to limit digital overload in children is to allow limited time and access. Unfortunately, they may not understand why you are doing this. They may feel cheated, but take the time to discuss alternate options as well as help the child gain understanding.
Alternative Activities
Alternate activities can be used to focus children elsewhere. There are a variety of clubs that are available for youth activities that will provide a safe alternative. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are usually available in most areas as well as 4-H. Each teach children living skills and provide additional social support to kids.
Sports are a wonderful way to involve children in an active lifestyle. Communities have sign-ups several times each year. Public schools usually send out notices during sign up time. Home school families can also participate.
Preventing digital overload in our children is important in this day and age. Technology has many wonderful benefits but can create issues in children behavior which is not necessary. Teaching children how to use technology effectively will bring great rewards in the future.
