The DeSean Jackson punt return yesterday may be the play of the year. In fact, the DeSean Jackson punt return has a chance to be even more historic down the line. Already, it has put the Eagles on the brink of an NFC East title, instead of holding onto the final wild card spot. In addition, they have a chance to get a bye week if they win out, and get their many injured stars ready for the playoffs. But can the DeSean Jackson punt return also be the trigger for an actual trip to the Super Bowl as well?
As it turned out, even if the Eagles finally lost, they would still be a game ahead for the final wild card berth. Yet it would be all doom and gloom in Philadelphia anyway, as any realistic hopes for a Super Bowl title would have been dashed.
Without the comeback and DeSean Jackson punt return, Philadelphia would have resigned themselves to another first round playoff defeat. For all of Michael Vick’s heroics, and all the offensive big plays, this season seemed set to end no differently than last year.
Instead, all looks bright for the Eagles – at least under the glow of this comeback. All they need is one more win to clinch the division, and guarantee at least one home playoff game. Since their last two games are at home, against the Vikings and Cowboys, this seems like a simple task.
The memories of the DeSean Jackson punt return, and the final eight minutes yesterday, will still have to be cleared out soon, however. Now that they are in a prime position in the NFC, the season has become Super Bowl or bust all over again.
If they win out, and the Bears lose once, they will have a bye and give Vick and company much needed rest. In addition, they could be regarded as the NFC favorite, even if the Falcons get the top seed. After all, they are the only team to ever defeat Matt Ryan in Atlanta, and they handled the Falcons without Vick back in October.
But for everything they did at the end yesterday, the Eagles didn’t need to be in that position. The ending buried how Philadelphia was run ragged by New York much of the way, gave up costly turnovers, let Eli Manning burn them for four touchdowns, and had questionable decisions from Andy Reid. Yet the DeSean Jackson punt return was just one of many examples on how the offense can make up for all of that.
It seems the only way for the Eagles to finally win the Super Bowl this year is in shootouts. Yet after this latest shootout, the dreams of a Super Bowl title are still alive, and not on life support. If the punt return from DeSean Jackson is followed by a NFC title in five weeks – and a greater title in seven – then it will be even more legendary than it is today.
