When one thinks of the amazing authentic diner, it becomes easy to picture such components as the famous counter and stools, the neon lights, the retro fifties feel, and of course the delicious food. If you’re looking to actually experience a diner with all of these things (especially the delicious food), one need look no further than the Post Road Diner in Norwalk, Connecticut. I dined there often while working down the street at an old job, so you could say that I’ve been a patron of this amazing diner since 2006. Without hesitation, I can easily say that I plan to keep it within my dining circle for years to come.
Located just off of Interstate 95 in Norwalk, the diner sits along the Route 1 (The Post Road), and is easily spotted by its signage, which immediately brings one back to the days in which diners were the happening places to be. Inside, you are immediately taken back by the stools, the booths, and the feel that you have truly found “diner bliss”. The walls are adorned with decorations that change with the time of year, and having just visited on the cusp of February, there were pink and red hearts hanging from the ceiling and the walls, truly giving a homey feel to the restaurant. Decorations that are a constant staple are numerous photographs and posters from the fifties and beyond, as well as a unique collection of Coca Cola paraphernalia, from posters, to old bottles, to anything you can think of! Sorry Pepsi fans, you are out of luck at the Post Road Diner! Once you’ve entered, the service is fast, and everyone is ready to welcome you with a friendly smile.
Of course, who could discuss a diner without mentioning the food? After all, it is the reason why most people head out to the diner. Having been a customer for years, I’ve sampled many of their dishes, but have especially found their homestyle meals to be the best. That is not to take away from the quality of their sandwiches, which are often piled high with whatever meats and toppings you request, and accompanied by crisp, hot, and delicious french fries. I have sampled delectable meatloaf, mouth watering turkey and mashed potatoes, and truly scrumptious salisbury steaks. The service is fast, the food is piping hot, and the waitresses and waiters are friendly, and attentive to all who dine there.
On my most recent trip, the morning had just barely slipped by, so I decided that I was in the mood for breakfast, most notably…pancakes. Now, when at a diner, it seems to be a law of nature that ordering breakfast food and limiting it to only pancakes is next to impossible. So, with that; I decided to order, “The Sampler”. I was given a plate piled high with pancakes, scrambled eggs (my choice of preparation), bacon, sausage, ham, and hash browns. All of which were cooked to perfection, and left me thinking, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing!”. I washed it all down with a glass of orange juice, and all was served at a very reasonable price.
Upon finishing your meal, you are asked to bring your bill to the counter for payment, and as of recently, the establishment has now begun to accept credit and debit cards. This is a change from years past, and as long as you surpass the ten dollar minimum, you can now make payment with your debit card; with cash (and personal check) no longer the only forms of acceptable payment. This is a definite plus!
With my place of employment now located further away, I do not get the chance to visit the Post Road Diner as often as I would like to. That is why whenever my travels take me to the Norwalk, Connecticut area, I try to make it a point to stop in and visit. You should probably do the same thing, and trust me when I say that you will NOT be disappointed. Happy dining!
