The commercials for Dannon’s Activia Low Fat Yogurt are infamous. They’ve been poked fun of by talk show icons like Jay Leno, and satirized on shows like Saturday Night Live. The lovely actress Jamie Lee Curtis stars as the spokeswoman for Activia. So you wouldn’t think this yogurt would necessarily appeal to me, a 29 year old male. However, as I walked through the grocery store one day, I decided to pick up a 12 pack of Dannon Activia Low Fat Yogurt. It was the variety pack.
Activia sells itself as containing Bifidus Regularis, which is promoted as regulating your digestive system. Personally, I have suffered from stomach issues since the age of 15. Through the years I’ve been able to deal with my Irritable Bowel Syndrome by avoiding certain triggers. But I wondered if Activia would really work for me.
The yogurt comes in many different flavors. My 12 pack consisted of vanilla, peach, strawberry and mixed berry. All of which were low fat. You can also purchase the yogurt with granola, which they call a parfait crunch.
The flavor to the yogurt is different from other yogurts. It has a more chalky taste. Not disgusting or bad, but a noticeable difference. It may be due to its low fat content, or even more likely, the bifidus regularis. I found peach to be the best flavor. Nice small chunks of the fruit are mixed in to the yogurt. A lot of yogurts contain fruit that are so small and insignificant it tastes like you are eating fruit flavoring. With Dannon’s Activia, the fruit is large enough that you can taste the juice as you bite into it. The other two flavors that I enjoyed, but not as much as the peach, were strawberry and mixed berry. These flavors were good and an easy nutritional snack for the afternoon. I wasn’t impressed with the vanilla yogurt. I found it to be very plain. And with the plain flavor, I felt the bitter chalky taste became very prevalent. The fruity flavors masked the chalky taste well.
And my digestive system? Well, that too seemed to be getting better as well. After only a couple days I felt my stomach becoming less irritable and I was using the bathroom at a more regular interval. I never felt the need to strain or like I had an uncontrollable urge to have a bowel movement. I felt normal.
I would recommend trying Dannon’s Activia Low fat Yogurt if you’re looking for a healthier snack that will also keep your stomach in good working condition. The stomach is key to a healthy overall life. And the fact that it was able to regulate me, a person who has dealt with IBS for several years, is reason enough. I will continue to purchase this item when I go grocery shopping.
