(March 21, 2011) On Monday Night Raw, the new US Champion Sheamus defeated Evan Bourne in a non-title matchup. After the match, Daniel Bryan came down to the ring and used his rematch clause to challenge Sheamus for the US Championship. So its official Daniel Bryan will face Sheamus for the US title at WrestleMania 27. This would be a great match for Monday Night Raw, but should not happen at WrestleMania 27.
Daniel Bryan’s on-screen character has not been impressive in recent months. As I previously restated in a previous article, Daniel Bryan has become boring. What would he accomplish becoming the US Champion again? He needs a heel change, not a rematch for a meaningless title at WrestleMania 27. When Daniel Bryan was the US Champion, he rarely defended the title, and his role in the WWE storyline became boring. Gail Kim has certainly not helped his popularity and has nothing to do with him. Its funny because Bryan wears a shirt that says “Submission Wrestling,” but he doesn’t that many submissions in his matches. He is a great wrestler, but needs to live up to that t-shirt he wears. With all that said, Daniel Bryan is still a face and a rematch with a guy he has faced many times for a useless title at WrestleMania 27 should be a boring match.
Quite frankly, Sheamus winning the US title is about equivalent to him winning the 2010 King of the Ring competition. The US title no longer has any value, and the company officials awarded Sheamus the belt because of him already winning the WWE title twice. Sheamus and the The Miz are the only wrestlers in the last five years that have been successful capturing the WWE title and the US title simultaneously (excluding Bret Hart’s short title run in 2010). The late great Chris Benoit was the last WWE wrestler to win the WWE title and the US title at separate times. MVP held the US title for 343 days in 2007, Daniel Bryan 176 days in 2010, Shelton Benjamin 224 days in 2008, Kofi Kingston 126 days in 2009, but their title reigns never got them anywhere. My point is the WWE awarded Sheamus this belt so he won’t look like a mid-carder in the WWE. They have failed to realize that the US title is not a great championship in the eyes of most the WWE Universe.
WrestleMania 27 is supposed to have A-list matches and is supposed to outdo the previous WrestleMania PPV’s. Wouldn’t a US title match between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan create a boring moment at WrestleMania 27? Don’t get me wrong, both guys are great wrestlers, but they have faced each other multiple times. If Daniel Bryan regains the belt, than Sheamus capturing the US title will be in vein. If Sheamus retains then only a fraction of the WWE Universe will care. Many people within the WWE Universe don’t care about Sheamus, and many feel that his character is boring. Unless something amazing occurs in this match at Wrestle Mania 27, it’s a meaningless match.
