Before you purchase that next dietary supplement, especially a specialized one stop and do some research on that product first. Some dietary supplements are not only dangerous for you to take; they may contain ingredients that are actually illegal. These could include: steroids, prescription drugs or other prohibited substances.
How are these companies getting by with these practices?
The FDA (Food and Drug administration) does not police the safety of dietary supplements before they come to market. They are only responsible for their safety after they are put on the shelf. For this reason, many companies are able to taint their products with these substances without the FDA realizing that they are doing it. This includes products that are labeled natural.
This is a widespread problem that affects products that are sold on the internet and sometimes even in retail sales.
What types of dietary supplements are the most affected by this illegal act?
• Weight Loss Products
• Body Building Products
• Sexual Enhancement Products
What types of harmful properties may be found in these types of supplements?
Weight Loss Products:
You should avoid the weight loss products: Slimming beauty, Solo Slim and Slim 30 because they contain a substance similar to the banned diet product Miranda.
You should avoid any body building product that state that they are compared to anabolic steroids or that they may cause you to test positive if you are tested for drugs.
There are currently four products that contain a substance that is similar to the prescription sexual enhancement drug Viagra. The reason the FDA is concern about them is the fact that Viagra can cause a raise in blood pressure and can cause heart related problems in some people. These products are:
• Duro Extend Capsules for Men
• Magic Power Coffee
• Man Up Now
Yes, it is illegal for these companies to add these products to their products. The FDA is currently cracking down on these companies and other companies that are also using these ingredients. Yet, it may take time for them to remove all of them from the marketplace. This is why we ‘the consumer’ must be aware of what we are ingesting into our bodies by reading the labels of all products, including natural/herbal supplements.
If you wish to take any type of natural product, you really should do your homework. There are many good books on the market that can teach you about natural products such as the PDR for Herbal Products. You can also discuss your options with your doctor and your physician.
Just don’t assume that all natural products are safe to use. Remember there are many illegal drugs that are grown naturally.
