Learning about the solar system can be a lot of fun for young children. Especially those who are in kindergarten. Since this is actually going to be their first real lesson on the solar system, make it a fun one. There are plenty of activities you can do with your children that will last of the entire week. Below is a list of activities that you can do along with your children. The activities will last for the entire week and will usually take about an hour per day. In some cases, it can take less time. It really depends on your child, and how much time they need.
Start with a bit of coloring
You can first start with a few coloring pages for the solar system. Some have found it to be easier to break down each planet individually. This will help your child to learn the name of each planet as well as the differences between them. Before you start coloring them, show them a picture of what the actual planet looks like. Take a look at NASA’s Photo journal to see some amazing pictures of the solar system that you can show your children. Then allow them to color it the way they would like. The basic idea is to allow your child to give you their own interpretation of how the solar system should look. Help them name the different plants and color them. After doing your basic coloring pages you can move on to a few finger painting activities based on the solar system.
Simple projects
When it comes to the projects that you do with your children, try to keep them simple. Remember that kindergarteners have a short attention span, so you will want to make the projects easy to follow, and not take up a large amount of time. Try to schedule multiple projects throughout the day. One project is to make a star mini book. In this book, you can print out pictures from your printer, or have your child make their own star book, and write down some simple facts that you have found about the stars. Another fun project you can do with your kindergartener is to build your own solar system. All you need for this is a shoebox or some construction paper, and you can easily make your own Styrofoam based model. Do a simple online search and you may be surprised at how many examples and ideas you can find online.
Fun baking activity
If you and your children enjoy baking, you can easily turn an activity of baking cookies into a solar system lesson. Why not make some cookies that look just like the planets your children are learning about. You can use a basic sugar cookie recipe and then easily decorate the cookies to look just like the plants. The best part about this project is that your children can eat the finished product.
