There are a few ways that this crime could have been prevented. For instance, if a more through background check had been run, Loughner probably would have never received a gun license. They would have found that he smoked pot, vandalized, and was suspended from college because of his disruptive outbursts.
“We have a mentally unstable person in the class that scares the living crap out of me. He is one of those whose picture you see on the news, after he has come into class with an automatic weapon.” I snagged this quote from the Washington Post’s website. This was in an e-mail from one of his classmates, written on June 14 , long before the shooting.
Many would turn to stricter gun control laws as a solution. Stricter gun control laws, however, may not have prevented the massacre. If Loughner was determined enough, he would have been able to get his hands on a gun, whether he had a gun license or not. “The criminal will always have a gun,” as Charles Heller, co founder and secretary of an Arizona gun-rights group said.
So instead of turning to more anti-gun laws, the government should instead encourage citizens to carry and learn how to use guns. A trained citizen with a gun could have taken down Loughner shortly after he fired his first or second round.
Furthermore, there is evidence that when more citizens own guns, the gun-related crime rate is lower. An excellent example of this philosophy is found in Switzerland . According to Switzerland and the gun, an article featured on the BBC’s website, out of the six million citizens of Switzerland, there are nearly two million publicly owned firearms. The article states, “The gun crime rate is so low that statistics are not even kept.”
Apart from the two things I mentioned, either a stricter background check, in which case Loughner may have never gotten his hands on a gun, or if more citizens had been encouraged to learn to use and carry guns, in which case Loughner may have been shot before he was able to shoot more than just the congresswoman, I don’t believe there was anything else we could have done.
Needless to say, neither Sarah Palin nor Rush Limbaugh had anything to do with shooting. It is true that Loughner was politically motivated, but the philosophies he entertained were not in any way linked to Limbaugh’s radio show or the crosshairs on Palin’s map. This was an isolated crime committed by a mentally deranged individual who acted on his own ‘political theory,’ which he clearly stated was based on his “conscious dreaming.”
