Should you fight a bully? If caught fighting at school there can be severe reprimands, however does that mean you should not defend yourself? I believe in justice but is there a difference between taking justice into your own hands and allowing the administration to deal with it?.. What would you do?
Imagine a freshman at high school, not overly popular but is involved in sports and can make anyone laugh. Say he gets hazed by an older student, although this “hazing” is merely the older students boredom kicking in, the freshman doesn’t want to deal with it, not only is it demeaning but obnoxious. After a shove from the older student he can tell that the younger boy is distraught but persists in haggling with him. Finally hearing that the older boy isn’t afraid of a mere freshman who would easily get his ass kicked, the younger student strikes the other, and simply walks away. Standing like a douche, surprised at the younger boys choice of action and upper body strength the older boy simply keeps his mouth shut. However word gets around, and eventually both boys are called into the office. The student who struck the other is suspended for 4 days, while the older instigator gets let off with a “be nice” reprimand.
Now although you could place blame on both of these students, who really comes out of the situation with injustice? I can tell you personally that as being someone who has been in both of these predicaments, the one that gets away unscathed is the bully.
Schools these days all say they have a “bully free zone”, and strict punishment for the bully’s that do decide to come out. However, are the schools truly punishing the ones who deserve it? Or are they simply turning both party’s into victims, covering up the fact that one side is right and the other is wrong. Perhaps schools have turned physical arguments into crimes, allowing the criminals to get away with more psychological bullying. But which is worse, the shoving and punching between classes in the hallway or the bullying over the internet..?
Lets look at this from a different perspective. Say a kid is being harassed at school, simply for the hilarious thrill of watching a kid look like he’s about to shit his pants. The harassers aren’t willing to go farther than hazing because they are worried about getting in trouble at school. Instead they bombard the kids facebook with mean jokes and name calling. After a couple months of progressively worse treatment by his peers at school, he is found hanging in his room from a rope found in his garage. Looking back would you think it would have been better for the kid to have gotten his ass kicked, and the abusers gotten in trouble, and everyone allowed to move on with their lives? Im not saying everyone who gets bullied commits suicide, yet statistics do show that it happens, and happens too frequently. Even though there are a lot of variables contained in situations like this, I’m sure of one thing; that we are going down this bully free path all wrong.
