Christ’s Kitchen is in Montrose, Colorado and is a volunteer soup kitchen offering a free healthy lunch for people in Montrose and the surrounding communities. Senior citizens, the homeless, the jobless, and the poor can all receive a free meal at Christ’s Kitchen.
Christ’s Kitchen is the brainstorm of three people who wanted to help feed the hungry and homeless in Montrose. When Christ’s Kitchen began, approximately 35 people enjoyed a free meal daily. Today, that number has risen to 100 people and sometimes 200 people enjoying a free meal.
Christ’s Kitchen offers only one meal a day, lunch, and it’s free to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. The doors are open from 11:30 am – 1 pm, Monday through Friday. For some people, this is the only meal that they eat each day.
During these hard economic times, Christ’s Kitchen is serving a much needed meal to anyone that needs it. It has been recently estimated that there are approximately 232 homeless kids in the Montrose area. These kids are living under bridges and some come out to Christ’s Kitchen for the only meal available to them. Many locals believe that there’s actually more homeless children than what’s being reported.
Food is donated to Christ’s Kitchen by local grocery stores and every day there are different ingredients to work with. Local stores such as Safeway, Walmart, City Market, and the El Dorado Bakery all donate items to the soup kitchen. As a result of their donations, there is always a large pot of soup cooking to warm the hungry souls and a normal meal may include soup, salad, baked chicken, and rice.
Monetary donations have also been given to Christ’s Kitchen by local businesses. Wells Fargo, the Black Canyon Car Club, Altruisa Club, Walmart, the Black Canyon Quilt Show, and the City of Montrose have all made monetary donations to support Christ’s Kitchen.
Christ’s Kitchen is staffed by volunteers. Volunteers help serve lunches, to prepare meals, and to cook. The volunteers at Christ’s Kitchen not only work to prepare the daily meal, but they also mingle with everyone and treat them as family. They welcome each guest that enters Christ’s Kitchen for a meal.
Volunteers are always needed at Christ’s Kitchen and if you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Linda at 970 252-6415. Volunteering just one day a week would be greatly appreciated.
