Christmas with a Capital C is one of the best Christmas movies I have ever seen. Currently, it is airing on the Gospel Music Channel. The cast includes Ted McGinley (Dan and mayor), Daniel Baldwin (lawyer and atheist), Nancy Stafford (Dan’s wife), and Brad Stine (Dan’s brother).
It is about a mayor and his family who are Christians, and each year they put up a nativity display in town. An old friend, Mitch, a lawyer and atheist, suddenly decides to come back to Alaska to visit the place that he grew up in. Dan, the mayor, and his brother, know Mitch well from high school.
For some reason, Mitch has been jealous of Dan and his brother for many years. Mitch reveals this to them at the end of the movie. He has had bad experiences with Christian people throughout his life and he resents them. When he arrives in town, he causes some problems for the mayor and the townspeople. He does not want the nativity displayed in town, so he files a complaint which brings a judge to town.
The mayor and the people in the town are upset because this has been a tradition for years, and all of a sudden this man shows up and tries to change things. According to the judge, they do have freedom of religion, but since the tax payer was funding this, they had to remove it. Mitch wanted all Merry Christmas signs to come down and be replaced with Happy Holidays. People were still trying to keep the Christmas spirit by singing carols and hymns, but Mitch even tried to stop that. He definitely wanted Christ out of Christmas.
Eventually the town found out that Mitch is a miserable man and has no family. He lost his job and did not have much. They realized that they did not really welcome him properly when he came back to town. At the end of the movie, the entire town went to where he was staying, and brought him gifts. Everyone first went to church on Christmas Eve, and then headed over to Mitch’s place.
Mitch was overwhelmed by all the love and attention and he had a change of heart. He and Dan, the mayor, shake hands at the end and Mitch says, “Merry Christmas.”
This was a wonderful story of what Christmas is all about. It’s about giving to others and showing love. People act the way they do because something is bothering them deep down inside like in Mitch’s case. As soon as he realized that people did care about him, he was a different man. Let’s show somebody today what Christmas is all about!
