Some celebrities get on a downward trend and just can’t seem to get away from it. Bad press. Mistakes. Public embarrassments. Christina Aguilera, for example, seems to be one who has seen a recent spate of negative events enter her world. Early Tuesday morning, March 1, she added an arrest for public intoxication to the growing list of bad things happening in her life and career.
TMZ reported that Christina Aguilera, along with boyfriend Matt Rutler, was arrested in West Hollywood, Calif., just before 3 a.m. PST. Police told the celebrity gossip website that the “Beautiful” singer was a passenger in a car police pulled over for erratic driving. The driver, Rutler, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. Both were taken to a West Hollywood substation for processing.
An undisclosed source told TMZ, “If the driver had NOT been arrested for DUI, [Christina] would have never been in trouble.”
In a subsequent report, TMZ confirmed that Aguilera was “arrested, booked, fingerprinted, put a cell, and then monitored.” L. A. County Sheriff’s spokesman said that since the singer had not been involved in any criminal activity, they were not looking to prosecute. Steve Whitmore added that she would be released when she could “safely take care of herself.”
She was released after spending a little over five hours in jail.
The public intoxication arrest is just the latest in what seems to be a long list of things going wrong in the singer’s life. Christina Aguilera was recently divorced (finalized two weeks ago, but to become official in April) and her last album sales were far less than expected, causing her to cancel her scheduled world tour. And what looked like a resurrection turned out to be short-lived when her movie “Burlesque” was released to tepid critical response (with Cher being nominated for a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress) and only made $39 million in domestic box office sales, accoding to Box Office Mojo. To make matters worse, after performing a song from the movie on Britain’s “X Factor” in December, the singer came under fire for what was perceived as an inappropriate stage show.
But the slowdown in her career was nothing compared to the the public embarrassment of forgetting the lyrics to the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in February. That mishap was quickly followed by a humiliating fall on stage at the Grammy Awards just a few days later.
TMZ noted that “sources close” to the singer have been attempting to get the 30-year-old songstress into a rehab program for the last few weeks.
