Chris Medina is a rock singer and songwriter. According to JoesPlaceBlog, he has made the Top 40 for the 10th season of American Idol. The producers and judges are set to pick a Top 20. If Medina makes that round, he will go up against 9 other guys in a single semifinal voting round for the public vote. 10 girls will compete on a different night, and 5 of each gender will make it to the final round (plus wildcards from the judges and producers).
It is somewhat difficult to determine Chris Medina’s talent level because there is apparently only one recording online as of this time. But based on that one video, he appears to be typical cannon fodder. In other words, Medina likely will not be cast as a favorite and will thus have a hard time building a sufficient fan base to win the 10th season of American Idol.
The one video that Chris has up online at this time is an original song that he wrote called “What Has Become of Me.” He wrote the song for his fiancee Juliana, who apparently was in the hospital after a car accident. Medina seems tailor made for presenting the all-too-common Idol backstory. He explains on the video that he was supposed to get married to Juliana that very day but has to wait cause she is still recovering from the car accident. It’s a sentimental story, indeed – exactly the kind of story that American Idol would love to exploit. It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if Idol had him tell the story and sing this song for an audition.
I am just making an educated guess here, but based on his very average voice, Medina is probably cast as a sentimental favorite – much like Danny Gokey was in Idol’s 8th season – but without the vocal skills to match. So he will have a tough time repeating that success.
Update: Indeed, TMZ has reported that Chris Medina actually had his paralyzed fiancee Juliana Ramos with him for his American Idol audition. Supposedly, even Steven Tyler cried during his audition. This will almost certainly make the audition episodes.
Some people might disagree about his voice. Certainly, Chris Medina sounds a lot like Green Day at times. So we know his basic vocal tone could be part of a successful group. But there is a difference between singing for a group and going out there as a solo act. Like most rockers, Chris seems to be more of a frontman than a solo singer.
The biggest problem I see with his singing is that his higher register is a bit shaky. So he doesn’t really have a great range. I won’t give an opinion on the song he wrote because American Idol is mostly a singing competition. It’s not really fair to either credit or discredit someone based on writing skills when some contestants are not songwriters.
Unfortunately for him, Chris Medina does not seem like someone cast as a favorite. He is just the type of contestant to either get cut in the Top 40 before the voting rounds (cause they’ve used him for all they think he is worth) or get cut in the semifinals. However, because there is only one semifinal round, he could easily sneak into that Top 5 based on backstory or other factors. But this would likely just be a slower death. Based on what we know so far, Chris Medina neither has the image nor singing talent to win the 10th season of American Idol.
