American Idol fans are split over the last audition in Milwaukee. Chris Medina, 26 walked in front of the celebrity judges with the engagement ring of his girlfriend of eight year hanging around his neck. Randy Jackson immediately interrupted his introduction by asking Chris Medina question about his fiancée. He told the story about a happy engagement ending in a terrible accident which left her in a coma for one and a half months. After the doctors believed she won’t make it she woke up brain injured. Chris and her mom are the caretakers of this young women and he is determined to stand by the vows he was going to make within two months after the accident. He longed to make it to Hollywood for her and he did. The 26 year old hopeful sang a song from: “The Script” Medina has a high range and a warm tune to his voice. Jennifer Lopez asked him to take bring his girlfriend. Chris said that this would “make her day.” A lot of fans were uncomfortable seeing the judges hurdling around this young brain injured women in the wheelchair. While especially Steven Tyler seems genuine by embracing her and kissing her forehead viewers were taken back that it was done on camera. See full audition here.
Here is a video from Chris and his mother updating friends and family a year after the accident way before the audition.
Once thefunnystone aka Dave posted his review of the show on votefortheworst his reader mostly commented on their disgust about Idol producer exploiting the tragedy while the rest of the two hour show is ignored in comments. Friends of Chris spoke in favor for Chris in the comment section. Rickey asked in a poll at rickey.org:”Did Chris Medina exploit his fiancée Juliana Ramos on American Idol?” At 10:46, on January 26 67.83% said no while 32.17 % said yes. If votefortheworst had the same poll it would be the other way around. Mj from Mjsbigblog writes: ” Dude can sing, he doesn’t need to exploit his poor fiancé” right after the audition. Today she was so kind to post a lot of show reviews on her page and everyone seems to be talking about Chris Medina, the guy with the brain injured fiancée.
Well we all know how this worked out for Season 8 Finalist Danny Gokey who was even present in Milwaukee cheering people on. Danny Gokey Wife passed away before his American Idol audition and while people felt sorry for him at first they got quickly annoyed with producers and it caused a Danny backlash since he constantly brought her up. At first I thought that producers wanted him to do that but he even talked about her on the American Idol tour. So I think the Idol executive actually may have told him by the end of the show to stay away from the sob story as it calmed down in the last couple weeks of his Idol run.
However fans were in love with American Idol Winner David Cook. He avoided trap questions from host Ryan Seacrest who it seems constantly wanted Cook to talk about his brother who suffered from brain cancer. David Cook had an emotional Idol run but the story about his brother only broke after a reporter told a local TV Station that Cook requested his orange bracelet so he can wear it on the show in honor of his cancer stricken daughter. Upon investigation fans found out that Cook’s brother was suffereing and some local fans helped to sponsor a medical flight so Cook’s brother could see David Cook perform live on the American Idol stage. David Cook never brought the story up nor did he answer questions when he was pressed for the story. It showed great integrity on David Cook’s part and we loved him for it.
There were other sob stories on Idol from Asiah Epperson father passing away right before the show to special needs children. In Season 8 we had the first disabled contestant. Scott McIntyre who was blind made it in the top ten. But it seems that he also never talked much about his disability and just went with it. The guy has a wonderful sense of humor. He makes me laugh.
So how do I stand on Chris Medina? While sob stories sometimes bore me I think it is important to champion contestants, who display integrity and determination to stand to their words. Idol was for years a show where we laughed with Simon Cowell about his mean spirited or at times honest comments. Steven Tyler’s enthusiasm and kindness shows us a newer gentler Idol and Chris Medina fits right in there. I think we were deprived and didn’t know it. I watched Nigel on SYTYCD and read his tweets. Sure this executive producers has ratings in mind and is a business man first. However I see a gentle side in this guy and I think he genuine wanted to feature someone who stands by their vows more then he wanted to exploit it for an emotional reaction form us and therefore higher TV ratings.
I bet it went down like this. Medina showed up with his girlfriend and their family to the audition. So they probably stood out. Producers got curious and asked for the story. He impressed with the story, auditioned and luckily had an OK voice. They probably then told him to show up to the next round with girlfriend and ring around his neck so they can get the story. Medina probably didn’t mean to have this negative reaction from those who believe that he exploits her.
In my Opinion Medina doesn’t have to stay with her to begin with since the accident happened before he married her but he chooses to which shoes Character. I find words describing him as selfish, jerk, and what not rather unfitting for that situation.
People like Chris Medina are rare and that is why we discuss him so much. I wish him success in the future. I am not sure if he will make it through Hollywood because better singers have auditioned but for right now I will root for him.
Chris Medina didn’t exploit his girlfriend. His character rather advanced him to the advantages of both of them.
