Parents, are you looking for an unusual activity for your child’s next birthday party? If so, you may want to consider taking them on a “Double Key Treasure Hunt.”
Designed for people of all ages, a “Double Key Treasure Hunt” is not your ordinary, run-of-the-mill treasure hunt.
Employing the use of actual relics, the treasure hunt takes participants through a series of clues that leads them to various locations throughout a specific region.
Currently, treasure hunts are offered in both St. Louis and Washington, DC.
According to the company’s website, the “Double Key Treasure Hunts” management is hoping to expand to Philadelphia, Kansas City, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago and Baltimore in the near future.
What follows is a brief description of the “Double Key Treasure Hunts” program and how parent’s can go about reserving one for their child’s next birthday.
Description of the Treasure Hunts
The entire treasure hunt process begins from the “Double Key Treasure Hunts” website where parents select and purchase a treasure hunt kit.
The treasure hunt kits vary in price depending on the location of the hunt, how many treasure items are needed and what treasure item is selected.
Parents should be advised that admission to the various locations included within the treasure hunt itself is not included.
Depending on the treasure hunt selected the locations are generally museums and historical sites whose admission prices vary. With most treasure hunts there are anywhere from three to nine locations involved.
As of 2010 there are four different St. Louis treasure hunt kits available that range in price from $119 to $149 and only one Washington, DC treasure hunt kit which sells for $129.
Each treasure hunting kit comes with a series of antique items that are stored in a burlap bag, clues, treasure hunt handbook and one 3 inch vial filled with gold dust and flakes.
Parents can order additional gold vials for $9.50 each or opt to substitute the gold vials with antique coins. The antique coin sets cost more than the gold vials. The average price range for the antique coin sets is between $25 and $65.
Once purchased, the treasure hunt kit is then mailed to the parent in a non-descript box to avoid detection by the children.
The parent then hides the clue laden burlap bag for the children to find. Once the children find the bag the actual treasure hunt begins.
Children read the clues and visit various locations in the area chosen. At the conclusion of the treasure hunt the parent gives the participants the treasures that were included in the treasure hunting kit.
The duration of the treasure hunt is really up to the people participating in it. Parents should expect to realistically spend anywhere from four hours to several days treasure hunting depending on the hunt selected.
