The Chicago Academy Elementary (TCA) school, located in the Portage Park neighborhood on Chicago’s Northwest side, is celebrating its 10th year in existence during the 2010-2011 school year. The school opened its doors to neighborhood students in the fall of 2001 and has been educating students from preschool through the eighth grade ever since. The school will mark the occasion with a school-wide celebration.
The school was opened as a partnership between the Chicago Public Schools and the Academy of Urban School Leadership, a non-profit organization aimed at improving education in our urban environment. The school serves a dual purpose: to create a lifelong learning environment through an innovative curriculum focused on the whole child, and to improve overall CPS achievement through the training or retraining of exceptional teachers and leaders in our school system.
The school has accomplished much in the past 10 years, including graduating its first 8th grade class that attended TCA all the way through since preschool. The school has added many extracurricular activities over the years, such as drama, football, soccer, violin lesson and academic clubs. And the cheerleading squad has won many regional championships. The Middle School offers additional opportunities, such as participation in regional science fairs and the National Junior Honor Society.
In 2006, active parents from the school organized the Friends of The Chicago Academy to serve as both an interactive parent and staff organization, as well as to organize and administrate fundraising at the school. Each year the Friends provide additional funding to classroom for resources and programs and plan other fun events for students and their families.
Academically, the school ranks above average in performance in reading, math and science. Of the nearly 600 students, 89.3% were meeting or exceeding state standards as of 2010. According to a 2009 parent survey, 96% of parents report satisfaction with the school.
To mark the 10th year occasion, TCA will be holding a family festival in May to celebrate the school’s birthday. The event will bring together students and their families to share food representing the diverse ethnic make-up of the student body, as well as a raffle, games and entertainment. Students and families of TCA look forward to celebrating the event as well as continuing to take advantage of the exceptional learning opportunities available at TCA.
