Many of us know that we should be reducing our carbon footprint. We understand the negative impact we have had on the world around us and we want to do something about it. We want to do what we can but we simply don’t believe that we have the funds to do so. Installing the latest and greatest in green technology is not cheap.
The perception that reducing your carbon footprint can only be done at a high cost is wrong. Most changes are not only cheap; they can end up saving you money in the long run.
Here are 10 cheap ways to reduce your carbon footprint
1. Reduce water usage.
Water is the most carelessly used resource that we have. Changing how you use it can reduce your carbon footprint and save you money. Water yards and gardens at night, take slightly shorter showers, turn the water off while you brush your teeth, install a $20.00 low-flow shower head (it might actually increase water pressure) or put a brick in your toilet tank. The options are limited only by your creativity.
2. Seal your house
It’s hard to reduce your carbon footprint when you are heating and air conditioning the neighborhood. Check around all of your windows and doors to make sure there are no draughts. If you find some, most hardware stores have ways to seal these leaks at really cheap prices.
3. Turn down the temp
Reducing your heat by one degree in the winter will save 3% energy consumption. Turning it up in the summer has the same effect. Not only will you reduce your carbon footprint, you will also save some money.
4. Unplug things you are not using
When items are plugged in they are using electricity regardless of whether you are using them or not. When you are not using something simply unplug it. There is no reason for all of the random things that are plugged in all over the house to be continuously plugged in. This is not only a cheap way to reduce your carbon footprint, it’s free.
5. Hot water tank
Turn down the temp on your hot water tank and make sure it is well insulated. You can buy a sleeve to go over your tank for relatively cheap that will save energy reducing your carbon footprint and save you money
6. Defrost your freezer and fridge often
Doing so will help your fridge/freezer to be more efficient and use less energy
7. Buy locally produced food at the local market
They are not shipped from as far away causing less fuel to be used in transport. Many times locally produced products have a better taste and are fresher. Who can argue with that?
8. Use public transportation when possible
This will save you a fortune and drastically reduce your carbon footprint. Of course, you know this one already.
9.Monitor your tire pressure on your car
Proper air pressure will ensure efficient driving conditions for your vehicle.
10.Stop drinking bottled water
Why ship something from halfway across the country when you can get it for free in your own kitchen. By using your sink you save on shipping and you do not have to worry about all of the plastic bottles that are used. Also, the water out of your tap is really cheap compared to prepackaged water.
Something to keep in mind
When trying to reduce your carbon footprint taking small steps is important. Don’t burn yourself out trying to do too much at once. Instead each week try on thing new. By doing so you will not shock yourself as much and you are more likely to continue to keep the new behaviors in place. Doing so will allow you the best chance to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s the small changes over time that will make a huge difference.
