Notorious professional wrestler and best selling author Mick Foley gained his fame from taking enormous punishment inside the wrestling ring. Watching the pain Foley endured during his wrestling career might give you the idea Mick Foley doesn’t feel. However, reading the wrestler’s third memoir, The Hardcore Diaries, tells you differently. In fact, Mick Foley possesses great empathy for others and displays this through charitable work.
Child Fund International
Child Fund International, formerly known as the Christian Children’s Fund, focuses on getting children to fulfill their potentials. One way the charity does this involves one-on-one sponsorship programs. Mick Foley has served as one of these sponsors since the early 1990s. He describes the experience in The Hardcore Diaries saying “Sponsoring kids… has come to be one of the most important parts of my life.” Foley further demonstrated his dedication to Child Fund International with his fourth and most recent memoir, Countdown to Lockdown, by donating half of his advance to the charity.
Rape Abuse Incest National Network
Mick Foley used the other half of his Countdown to Lockdown advance to make a charitable donation to Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN). RAINN aims to raise awareness of violent sex crimes. The organization hopes through education violent sex crimes will occur less and less. Mick Foley has used his celebrity to help RAINN work towards their goals. By discussing violent sex crimes in media interviews Foley has raised awareness to these atrocious crimes. He has also trained to become a RAINN online hotline volunteer.
Individual Commitment to Charity
Mick Foley has showed an individual commitment to charity and good will through his own actions. For instance, Foley shares a story in The Hardcore Diaries of how he reached out to Make a Wish Foundation to see if they had any wrestling fans who’ve already received their wishes but would enjoy meeting Foley as sort of a bonus wish. As a result Foley met Brian Hopkins, a kid with a somewhat severe case of cerebral palsy. In what seems like common Foley fashion, the wrestler let his meeting with Brian evolve into a full-pledged friendship. He even helped give Brian a third wish of sorts by scheduling a meeting between Brian, who likes metal music, and Dee Snider, Twisted Sister’s front man. Overall, Brian Hopkins is only one instance found in The Hardcore Diaries which demonstrates Mick Foley’s individual commitment to charity.
*Please note this list only represents the tip of Mick Foley’s charitable iceberg. This is in no way a comprehensive list of all of Mick Foley’s charitable activities.
