Our little preschool, Happy Hours, honors grandparents in a special way with a Grandparents Tea / Art Fundraiser. With busy parents who both, often work outside of the home, rely on grandparents to bring the kids to school, sometimes very early in the morning and then pick them up again, after a long day. Hopefully some of these little guys get to go home after lunch which gives grandparents some Love time. This special, grandparents tea is to honor the many grandparents that we all love. As Valentine’s Day helps us show our love to others this tea time together expresses the same meaning.
This is my first experience with the grandparents tea at this school, and I was excited to be able to honor these special people, along with the rest of the staff. I arrive at school later in the morning and a lot of the children are already at school so this tea time will give me a chance to meet some of the grandparents that bring their grandchildren in early. These adoring people who bring big smiles and hugs to the children as they arrive at school, to pick them up are vital in so many ways to the wellbeing of our precious students.
We offer an original work of art, by each student and make this available for sale. Some of the art projects are so adorable from hand prints to hand painted collages, and self portraits of the entire family. Ideas: hand prints in pink, red, and purple, self portraits along with their family, paintings using pink, red, and purple, cut out hearts with Paper Mache designs, and flowers with heart petals. Our class painted with these same colors to make a beautiful collage.
This project was to be an open ended project and self directed by the child so as to bring more of their personality to light. This precious art is put into an 8X10 picture frame that is too irresistible not to purchase, and the ensuing grandparents are trapped, I mean offered this once in a lifetime chance to purchase a one of kind masterpiece by their very own artist. For only $5.00 this art work is taken home, hung on the wall, and treasured for a lifetime.
Along with the art display we have hand decorated, heart shaped cookies, iced tea, and lemonade served in and on party napkins and cups. The grandparents will listen to a few cute songs and finger plays in our chapel and then offered the chance to visit the classrooms to enjoy a delicious frosted cookie and a cool drink. The classrooms are decorated for Valentine’s Day with more cute art displays that the grandparents will surely love as well.
Our song: I’m a Little Teapot:
I’m a little teapot short and stout,
Here is my handle, here is my spout,
When I get all steamed up hear me shout,
Tip me over and pour me out.
(An added touch)
I’m a little teapot come see me
Oh how I love your company
I can give you hugs and kisses too, (hug self and throw a kiss)
So let me share my love with you. (point to grandparents)
A Note about Grandparents Day
Not to be confused with grandparents day which is celebrated in September on the first Sunday following Labor Day, its founder Marian McQuade’s primary purpose was to celebrate and honor the lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to encourage grandchildren to inherit the wisdom and heritage from their grandparents. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter made it a National Holiday. This year 2011 it falls on September 11th. Source: www.apples4theteacher.com
