Two pivotal things happen in this episode- Beckett gets a little closer to finding out the truth about her mother’s murder and finally…the scene we’ve all been waiting for…the kiss between Beckett and Castle. Was it all that we hoped? Perhaps not but it was still hot.
But I get ahead of myself- let’s start from the beginning.
The episode opens with a man apparently considering suicide then a phone call is made to Beckett. It’s the Detective that worked her mom’s murder. Looks like he’s got something he needs to get off his chest.
Detective Reglan asks Beckett to meet him at a coffee shop with the old “come alone, don’t bring any cops”. Beckett of course asks Castle to join her; he’s not a cop so it should be alright.
Reglan says he’s got the big C (cancer) and needs to confess a few things. He got into some shady dealings about 19 years ago. Before he can tell Beckett what this has to do with her mom Reglan’s on the floor with a bullet wound. Before help can arrive or they can learn more, he’s dead.
Once again Beckett’s left with a literal dead end in her mother’s case. Someone definitely doesn’t want the truth to lead back to them.
Trying to learn anything they can about Reglan’s past they talk to Reglan’s fellow police buddy, Dave McCallister (who was recently on ” Hawaii Five-0 ” and has made the rounds as a bit player in many other shows like “CSI”) McCallister leads them to drug dealer turned “legit” business man Vulcan Simmons.
Simmons is quite intelligent in that scary bad guy way (got to love his voice though). He had issues with JoAnna Beckett when she ran an anti-drug campaign in his neighborhood. His commentary about Beckett’s mom sets her off into a rage. Castle soon follows ready to back her up. Ryan and Esposito run in to pull Beckett off Simmons.
Of course the Captain orders her off the case and gives it to Ryan and Esposito who try to “respectfully decline the case” but the not so politely tells them it’s theirs. The investigation leads them to security camera footage of the gunman swiping a woman’s key card so he has access to the building where the shot that killed Reglan came from. With luck they see that the shooter touched the woman’s arm. They find her and pull prints.
The shooter’s name is Hall Lockwood (who was also recently on “Hawaii Five-O”, he’s also been on “Lie To Me”). He has no record and he seems to have only existed for the past two years. The only lead they have is pills be bought from some rich kid who says he’s never seen Lockwood, but sold the pills to a chick named Jolene in Brooklyn.
Castle goes to Beckett’s apartment and she shows him her investigation wall- all about her mother’s death. Her boyfriend Josh is off in Africa, good he can stay there for all I care. Beckett opens up about her mom’s case and asks Castle why he keeps coming back to work cases and put himself in danger. We know why. Going through all the old stuff of Beckett’s moms they find some old photos and film. Castle realizes there are less prints then negatives. The negatives turn out to be photos of the ally where JoAnna Beckett died taken by her weeks before her murder. Hmmm…things are getting weird.
They find out that an FBI agent was killed in that alley long before JoAnna Beckett died. Mafia crime guy Joe Puglatti pleads guilty to the crime after John Reglan arrested him. This puzzle is getting more complicated. Beckett visits Puglatti in prison and he tells Beckett that there was a gang of kidnappers running the city back then that kidnapped mafia guys and held them for ransom. The undercover FBI agent was killed during one of the kidnappings. Reglan pinned it on Puglatti. Puglatti contacted civil rights attorney, yes you guessed it, JoAnna Beckett to help him out. She’s the only one who would look into the case- and she died for it.
Looks like she pissed off the wrong people.
Castle and Beckett meet up with McCallister again. He confirms everything, even admits to the kidnapping ring, but he won’t cop to hiring Coonan (the one that actually killed Beckett’s mom) or Lockwood, who is the one that killed Reglan.
So back to finding Lockwood and who he’s working for.
They trace two Jolenes in Brooklyn. One Jolene is dead the other residence is a trap. Lockwood kidnaps Esposito and Ryan. Beckett and castle race to find them at Lockwood’s lair.
Lockwood demands they tell him everything they know about the case. Ryan is dunked in a tortuous ice bath while Esposito helplessly watches. Not to give in Ryan and Esposito both keep the snarky antics going and piss Lockwood off even more. Thankfully it buys them a little time.
Beckett and Castle finally get an address and arrive at Lockwood’s lair. But they need to create a diversion so the guard won’t be “on guard”.
This finally leads to … THE KISS!
Beckett and Castle pretend to be a drunk couple, feeling a bit amorous, making out in the street while the guard gets close to see what they’re up to. During the kiss they both seem to get a little carried away. Awesome.
Beckett still keeps her head in the game though and knocks out the guard just as he gets close enough. Castle has a momentary OMG squee moment before chasing after Beckett to save the guys. Beckett saves the day- and Ryan and Esposito while Castle actually saves her by jumping Lockwood just as he’s about to take Beckett down. He beats him bloody. Way to go Castle.
After all that Beckett and Castle seem uncertain about each other after that amazing kiss but she thanks him for having her back.
At the end Beckett visits Lockwood in prison with a warning that that he might meet some of her friends in there. She also says she’ll keep visiting him until he tells her who hired the hit on her mother.
What an amazing episode. It sure cranked the level of sexual tension up a few levels all while getting Beckett a little closer to the truth even if it does open a whole new line of questioning about her mother’s death.
