If you are drawn toward collecting rocks from the different places you visit, you may find lithomancy an appealing form of fortune telling. Like other forms of divination, casting stones shows probabilities based on the choices and actions you have made up to the point you ask your question.
Fortune telling of any kind can let you know if you are headed in the right direction or warn you if you are heading down a path you’d prefer to not follow. The follow method is adapted from Amber K and Azrael Arynn K’s book, Candlemas (Llewellyn Publications, 2001).
Collecting Stones for Divination
You will want to go to a rock and crystal shop, museum gift shop, or New Age shop to purchase nine polished semiprecious gemstones. You will need one stone from each of the following categories.
Earth Stone – Any jasper, petrified wood, or a fossil
Moon Stone – Moonstone or angel agate
Sun Stone – Sunstone, tiger’s eye, or citrine
Mercury Stone – Clear quartz or any agate
Venus Stone – Green aventurine or rose quartz
Mars Stone – Red jasper or bloodstone (hematite)
Jupiter Stone – Amethyst or sugilite
Saturn Stone – Obsidian, black onyx, or Apache tear
“X” Stone – Anything unusual, your choice
Telling Fortunes with Semiprecious Gemstones
Draw a twelve-inch circle on the ground, in a tray of sand, or, if you must, on a sheet of paper or on the floor. You can mark the circle with a stick, chalk, or a piece of wool yarn. Hold the nine stones in your cupped hands and concentrate on your question. You may wish to state the question out loud.
Drop the stones from a foot or so over the circle. The stones should spread out over the circle. If some stones bounce out of the circle you do not need to interpret those stones as they have nothing to say about your question. If a stone lands on a line it could mean a periphery influence or perhaps something that is just leaving or entering your life – you will need to determine the interpretation.
Fortune Telling Interpretations
The earth stone refers to home, prosperity, or material possessions.
The moon stone suggests magick, intuition, or emotions.
The sun stone is connected to success or healing.
The Mercury stone refers to communication or travel.
The Venus stone is connected to love or relationships.
The Mars stone suggests action, assertiveness, or conflict.
The Jupiter stone recommends expansion or education.
The Saturn stone suggests limitations or obstacles.
The “X” stone hints at an unknown factor, something not yet predictable.
Also, look at the way the stones have fallen. The closer the stone is to the center of the circle, the more important it is. Interpret stones in their relationship to other stones, as described in Candlemas.
Mars stone near the Jupiter stone – A conflict will expand or assertiveness or action is called for
Sun stone near the Venus stone – Success in love
Earth stone near Saturn stone – Limited prosperity
Earth stone near Jupiter and Sun stones – Increase prosperity or a home project will go well
Use your intuition in fitting the interpretations to the question you have asked. There is no right or wrong answer. Casting stones can guide you toward probable outcomes if you continue following the same path.
