There are countless ways of standing out in the workplace; however, many of them will not lead to career success. While marching to the beat of your own drummer may be one of your more endearing qualities, it is not the type of behavior that translates into career advancement. To stand out at work, one doesn’t need to take drastic measures. Some of the best and most productive changes are small and easily overlooked. Here are some tips that will help you stand out without making a scene.
1. Upgrade your wardrobe. Nobody has ever been passed over for a promotion by being overdressed. It’s not necessary to spend a small fortune on designer clothes, but it is a good idea to purchase new clothing for work from time to time. Many people rotate a few basic outfits for work for years at a time. It’s hard to stand out when you’ve been wearing the same suit twice a week for the last five years.
2. Upgrade your vocabulary. A person’s intelligence is often determined by the way they speak and the words they use. Developing good speaking and writing skills is an easy way to give the impression of intelligence, sophistication, and confidence.
3. Work smarter, not harder. Showing up early and staying late does not prove a single thing to an employer, except that perhaps you are lacking a social life. An employee’s value is not determined by how many hours they spend behind a desk, but by what gets accomplished in those hours. If you can find a way to get all of your work done in half the time, it is far more impressive than working for longer periods of time trying to get all of your work done. Aim for efficiency, not overtime.
4. Be a cheerleader. Every workplace needs a cheerleader; someone to boost spirits and increase morale. This can be done in a variety of ways: remembering co-worker’s birthdays, decorating the workplace for holidays, sending get-well-soon cards to clients or co-workers who are sick, or even bringing in a box of donuts for your co-workers for their coffee breaks.
5. Be a specialist. Establish yourself as an expert in something, whether it’s your company’s computer software, customer service, organizational skills, or efficiency. Find something you are good at and devote yourself to it. It is easier to get noticed if you are great at just one thing, instead of being good at several things.
As you can see, it is not necessary to spend alot of time or money in order to make an impression. Regardless of your position, financial situation, or education level, these five tips will help you stand out in the workplace, ultimately leading to personal and professional growth.
