It’s the luck of the draw: one person can purchase a cheap watch and it will hold up for many years. Someone else can buy a cheap watch, and in no time, the watch quits telling time, or the band breaks. Many people toss the old watch in the trash and others hold on to it, hoping that they’ll fix it one day. If you have such a watch, and a little girl with a dollhouse, use it to make her dolls a new clock. Choose a grandfather clock, mantle cloth or even a wall clock. No matter what type of clock you make, it will be easy to create, and will look great in the dollhouse.
You can use a watch with a broken band or one that no longer tells time but the watch should be one which has a face rather than a digital watch. Most any regular watch will work but not one that has broken glass on the face.
Besides the watch itself you’ll need a box to make a mantle or grandfather clock. A good box to use is a paper mache box from a craft store. It’s cheap, comes in many shapes and sizes, and is really easy to decorate. Purchase a long, slender box for a grandfather clock and a square, rectangular, round or other shaped box for a mantle clock.
There are several different ways to make the paper mache box look like a clock cabinet. One is to purchase a clock sticker. The stickers are often sold to make décor for a dollhouse. The sticker clock, refrigerator, stove or other object is simply stuck to one wall of the dollhouse to give the appearance of that item being in the room. With a clock sticker, the sticker itself will show a clock face, but your watch will make a much nicer face on the clock.
A different way to make the clock cabinet is to cut a picture from a catalog. Glue the picture to the box to create the illusion of the clock cabinet. If the sticker or picture you use isn’t as large as the box, paint the box a similar color to the sticker or picture, then position the paper clock on the box.
Cut a hole in the box where the face of the real watch will go. It’s a good idea to take the watch with you, if you’re purchasing a sticker, to make sure it’s about the same size as the watch face on the sticker. Use glue or tape to secure the watch face in the “window” of the clock. If the box is large enough you can simply tape the band inside, but if the box is small, it might be necessary to remove the band from the watch before installing it.
The new clock will look fabulous in the dollhouse and you’ll be surprised at how cheap and easy it was to make a really nice clock. The owner of the dollhouse will love it!
