Brittany Mazur, a pageant contestant with experience in the Miss Tucson contest and other area productions, is also a singer who is competing for a spot on the 10th season of American Idol. As you would expect from an experienced pageant contestant, Brittany has a great deal of confidence and is comfortable on stage. She is also attractive, which can obviously be a plus for a singer.
However, American Idol winners tend to share certain characteristics that set themselves apart from at least most of the competition. Based on what we can see from Brittany Mazur’s performances that are posted online, she will have a very hard time winning on Idol.
Brittany seems to be a lot like contestants in earlier seasons of AI that did not generally fare well. She is a lot like that deluge of singers who always tried to sing Whitney Houston songs and largely came up short. But, like many singers of this generation, she apparently loves to sing Beyonce songs like “Listen.” This song has now become one of the most oversung pieces by young girls who aspire to be a diva-like singer. Before, it was Whitney, Celine or Mariah songs. Now, it’s apparently Beyonce for all the diva wannabes.
Simply put, Brittany seems to lack the overall power to pull off this kind of song. She frequently cuts off the notes because she is out of breath. This does not mean that she has no power, as she clearly is a competent singer. But mere competence is rarely good enough to win American Idol. Virtually all winners are adept enough to pick songs they can nail, thus avoiding too many bad weeks.
Confidence is good, but confidence does not tend to make up for a lack of ability when picking songs. Thus, the first thing Brittany would need to do is pick songs that she can deliver within her own singing abilities. If a contestant picks a song like “Listen,” then she needs to either nail the song or change it up enough to get the “creative artist” accolade. When it comes up short, she just looks like a weak singer even though the talent is there to some degree.
So if we assume that Brittany makes the voting rounds on Idol (we don’t even know if she will make it yet), then the first thing she is going to need to do is get a better strategy. She can shine singing a less-than-stellar “Listen” at beauty pageants because she has enough talent to stand out. But American Idol is the Big Leagues, not a beauty pageant. Simply being better than random baton twirlers, wannabe singers and other marginally talented beauty pageant types is not going to cut it on Idol. It’s time to tailor a strategy that includes careful selection of each song, making sure every selection is within her range of abilities as a singer.
Even still, it is going to be exceedingly hard for Brittany Mazur to make a run to win the 10th season of American Idol. Pageant types have never won. Only soulful singers or good musicians or performers have won. American Idol voters want far more than a pretty female face as a champion.
Musicality is almost certainly a prerequisite at this point in the show’s history. Just coming out and singing glorified karaoke is not enough. Unless Brittany shows a great deal more musicality than what we have seen online, she will have a hard time even going deep on Idol, much less winning the whole competition.
