Brandon Davies’ girlfriend hasn’t been identified. However, Brandon Davies’ girlfriend had been anonymous to the nation, and perhaps to most of BYU, without any trouble before recently. In fact, the BYU star had been anonymous to much of the country before this week, thanks to Jimmer Fredette’s shadow. Yet this week, college basketball fans have been reminded that Fredette doesn’t make up BYU’s whole team. After last night’s revelations, however, Davies’ girlfriend is at the center of that discussion, since premarital sex got her boyfriend kicked off the team.
The Salt Lake Tribune has revealed how Davies broke the BYU honor code, and got himself removed from the nation’s No. 3 team. Sources tell the Tribune that he admitted to having premarital sex, which violates the strict BYU honor code.
As such, the girlfriend has now been propelled to the center of this story, although she remains unidentified thus far. That stands to change soon enough, as the couple has overshadowed the Cougars’ seemingly magical season.
Days before this ordeal started, the Cougars had their biggest win of the year at San Diego State, and were pegged as a serious championship contender. But now that they’ve lost their best rebounder, and one of Fredette’s main helpers, the team is projected to suffer greatly. Their blowout loss at home to New Mexico last night seems to serve as proof.
Keeping Davies’ girlfriend anonymous might be the wisest course, considering how the school treated her boyfriend. BYU’s honor code, like the Mormon teachings at large, is very strict about things that other schools often let slide. Though it may seem trivial to others, this institution is determined to keep its students pure in all aspects of life.
Since so many college sports stars get away with much worse, BYU’s stand may have seemed refreshing at first. But now that everyone’s found out just why they removed their star, their honor code and belief system is under more controversy. If it costs the Cougars a dream run through March, it will come under that much more scrutiny, perhaps even from students.
In the meantime, the star’s squeeze is likely laying low, although more people outside of campus may be more sympathetic to the couple. However, it didn’t take long for rumors to spread that she might be pregnant, which would add another layer to BYU’s decision.
No matter what Brandon Davies and his girlfriend are going through, they are assured of hanging over the rest of the season. In fact, if BYU doesn’t go far in March after all, it may make a dramatic impact on March Madness at large.
