Recently one of my friends from China, who is a student at the Portland State University asked me if I knew any Boxing Gym nearby. Though I have been in Portland, Oregon for the past three years, I had never come across a Boxing Gym and so did a quick research to help him. Amazingly I found quite a number of gyms right around downtown Portland. Of all of them I found this gym in SouthEast Portland, by the name of Alive MMA. It was a boxing gym that was right in a commutable neighborhood with quite a few instructors to choose from.Â
The gym was a spacious one with nearly 10,000 sq feet space. The floors were divided into padded area for boxing and wooden flooring for yoga. The gym specializes in boxing while also offering training for crossfitting, mixed martial arts and yoga. There is also massaging and sauna services.Â
Compared to other gyms this was different since the instructors offer one on one training recognizing that since each individual may be strong in a particular technique there by helping each one to identify their strong point and schedule sessions to capitalize on their strengths.
All the instructors are well experienced and veterans in their field may it be kick boxing, jiu jitsu, karate or judo. They instructors themselves in turn were trained by experts who are well known in world martial arts stage like the olympics. The instructors work in such a way that they impart their experience on whoever they train by horning the skills and perfecting the technique.
There individualistic approach is much to be commended. The basic form and technique behind each move is first theoretically explained before being put to practice. Also defense moves and protective techniques to prevent punches are taught and perfected first before offensive training begins.Â
There is also a separate training program for kids, kids are taught to self defend and protect themselves and others in times of necessity. Kids are trained to be calm and composed under all situations and effectively use their skills.
The classes and schedules are flexible and can be chosen to meet our time. The pricing is also very nominal compared to what we get out of the gym, there are boxing bags, gloves, and all the gear needed to practice. I found this to be one of the few reasonably priced gyms. The gym also features a family atmosphere and has special discount when more Than one member of a family enroll.
The gym is one of it’s kind and though I don’t have a direct experience I do know that it is one of the reputable ones in Portland area and I would recommend it to anyone hereafter.Â
