As expected, Auburn will meet Oregon in the national championship game and everyone is satisfied with this except a few TCU fans who think they deserve a shot at it. But just because we have the top 2 teams undisputed playing against each other does not mean this is a good system. Any poll would have matched these two teams together for the title. This article isn’t about justifying a playoff but a simple 4 team playoff, including TCU and maybe Wisconsin or Oklahoma or Stanford would yield a clear #1.
Anyway, Michigan State was the Big Ten co-champ that was left out of a BCS game. However, they may well have the toughest game of the three. They play Alabama New Year’s Day in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando. Wisconsin gets TCU in the Rose Bowl and Ohio State gets Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. Clearly Arkansas is more deserving of the Sugar Bowl bid but no one can argue that they like their chances better against Alabama.
11-2 Oklahoma will play 8-4 Big East champ Connecticut in the Fiesta Bowl in the least interesting BCS game and one of the least interesting games this bowl season. The 11-2 ACC champ Virginia Tech gets 11-1 Stanford in the Orange Bowl. This is one that I am quite interested in as someone with ties to both schools, and two schools with good academic reputations.
We knew the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (the night before the national championship game) would feature one of the 3 co-champs of the WAC – Nevada, Boise State, or Hawaii – against the last ACC team (because the Pac-10 couldn’t fill it’s bowl slots). I was hoping but kind of expecting it might be my Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets against Boise State, but alas, it is 7-5 Boston College against 11-1 Nevada. For Boise State, that loss to Nevada cost them dearly in bowl status. The Broncos will be in the Las Vegas Bowl against Utah, which should still be a pretty good game.
Nebraska lost the final Big 12 championship game and as their consolation prize get a rematch with the Washington Huskies. As far as I can tell, this is the only bowl game with a rematch this year and Nebraska won the first meeting on September 18 in a rout 56-21.
The Music City Bowl in Nashville selected North Carolina and Tennessee, two teams that were originally scheduled to renew their rivalry next season until Tennessee backed out of the deal. Florida State and South Carolina, losers of the ACC and SEC championship games, get to play each other in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Sun Bowl gets two big name schools – Miami and Notre Dame – who have had up and down years and a 7-5 record each. The Independence Bowl gets the nations top two rushing teams in Air Force and Georgia Tech. Those two teams also are in the bottom 5 in passing yardage so if you like passing, don’t tune in for that one.
That’s only a small handful of the games going on but it highlights the most interesting games to me. Enjoy the college bowl season!
