The bowl projections 2010 mostly hinge on favorites winning tomorrow. If the bowl projections 2010 do hold, then Oregon and Auburn will finally officially meet for the championship, and the other BCS bowls will fall into place. It all hinges on the Ducks and Tigers beating opponents they are heavily favored to take care of. Even though Oregon faces an arch-rival, and even though Auburn is playing for the SEC crown, few believe that either of them will trip up now. But can Oregon State and/or South Carolina still wreck the current bowl projections anyway?
Tomorrow is the last chance for the BCS picture to change, after being dominated by Oregon and Auburn for weeks. But the two teams already survived massive threats, as the Ducks narrowly held off Cal three weeks ago, and the Tigers pulled off their massive comeback at Alabama last week.
As such, the bowl projections 2010 have been very stable coming into the final weekend, for once. If both Oregon and Auburn win, they are in the championship, and most of the other projected bowl matchups will fall in place. TCU will be reduced to the Rose, while Arkansas should get an at-large berth in the Sugar, and other SEC teams won’t be thrown off by a South Carolina upset.
All it would take is one upset to throw everything off balance, however. For TCU, it would elevate them through the glass ceiling, although others could be bumped down as a result. Yet after a whole season of perfection, could Oregon and Auburn really fall now?
For Oregon State, the bowl projections 2010 have them on the outside looking in, at 5-6. Their only hope for a postseason bid would be a win tomorrow, even though two other Pac-10 teams could be 6-6 as well. Arizona State will root for a Beavers loss, as might Washington if they become eligible.
If the Beavers do win, however, smaller bowls like the Alamo, Holiday, Sun, Fight Hunger and Maaco would get shaken up. As for the Ducks, they would have to settle for the Rose, while Stanford would still make the Fiesta or Orange.
For South Carolina, the bowl projections 2010 all have the Gamecocks in the Outback, presuming that they lose. They already lost to Auburn in September, before the Tigers were a No. 1 team, so their chances of avenging that loss would seem slim.
But if they were to win, all bowls with SEC ties would look decidedly different. Since a South Carolina win would likely put them in the Sugar, Arkansas would probably lose a BCS at-large berth. This in turn would affect placement for Alabama, LSU and Florida, while the BCS would scramble to put Auburn in another major bowl.
Yet many believe this won’t be necessary, and the bowl projections will stick on Sunday. The Gamecocks presumably have the best chance to change that, but the Beavers will be inspired to destroy an arch-rival. Tomorrow, both huge underdogs will have their slim chance to destroy BCS order.
