Bob Marley passed away almost 30 years ago. But Bob Marley birthday tributes today, and over the last 29 years, show that he isn’t really gone. While his music is still played around the world, he is still an icon for reasons other than his songs. The messages he spread, and his commitment to a greater tomorrow, have increased his influence with each passing year. To honor the 66’th birthday of Bob Marley, his family has put together another project to help his memory influence the world.
Many tributes are being held on the reggae icon’s 66’th birthday. But the most extravagant and important honor comes from the organization 1Love. In collaboration with the singer’s family, they are using the Internet to spread the call for clean water around the world.
For Bob Marley’s special day, fans can go to 1Love.org, and to their “1 Drop of Water for 1Love” home page. There, users can send out a virtual drop of water, by writing their name, e-mail address and a special message. For every virtual drop, $1 will be donated to charity, with the ultimate goal of raising $19,450.
Such a number sounds odd, but since Marley was born in 1945, they just added a zero in the end for their goal. Once they reach that many drops, 1Love claims that they can provide “clean, safe water” – instead of virtual water – to 1,000 people.
This tribute to Bob Marley and his message is technically nothing new, as this is the latest in a series of Marley Missions. 1Love.org and the late singer’s family have combined their efforts, to encourage “one small act of love and kindness every day” from people.
Because this message was the essence of Marley’s work, he remains a larger icon than ever, even decades after his death. His Facebook page has over 19 million friends, with more likely to keep coming. According to Billboard, merchandise with his name on it makes over $600 million a year, so he still has a lot of pull around the world.
Therefore, his family and their allies are easily using the power of Bob Marley to change the world, like he did while he was alive. The 1 Drop project was put in place for his birthday, so when the 30’th anniversary of his death comes next May, there’s bound to be another big charity effort in store.
For this latest work in Bob Marley’s name, donations can also be given at the 1Love Giving Center, or the mycharity: water page website.
