Bill Goldberg is one of the most decorated wrestlers in the history of WCW. My question is Bill Goldberg the most overrated wrestler in the history of wrestling?
From 1997-2001, Goldberg pretty much destroyed all of his opposition in the WCW. He was signed to the WCW in 1997, and made his debut on WCW TV Programming in 1998. Immediately in 1998 Goldberg was pushed to main event status and accumulated 173 consecutive victories along with multiple title reigns. His title reigns weren’t too lengthy, but 173 victories in a row? I understand that Goldberg was arguably the most popular wrestler in WCW history, but 173 wins in a row is utterly ridiculous. Vince Russo destroyed WCW with many stupid storylines, because Goldberg was great as a face but he didn’t deserve half of those victories. He was signed in 1997, and within two years he receives one of the biggest pushes in the history of wrestling.
Goldberg definitely excited me and many other fans when he was in the ring but WCW had so many other deserving guys besides him. The 173 victories in a row achieved by Goldberg were so predictable, and that’s why the WWF/WWE created the Gillberg character. The WWE has been always smarter than the WCW and knew not to push any guy on their brand not to win that many matches in a row. Wrestling is an entertainment for fans from many walks of life from all over the world. We do want to see the deserving wrestlers receive a push when they deserve it, but not win 173 in a row. As much as the CenaNation loves John Cena, but none of them want to see him win 173 matches in a row.
I do not dislike Goldberg as a wrestler; I just think that he was pushed to quickly. My other beef was his stint in the WWE. Goldberg’s stint in the WWE was so short and he didn’t stick around long enough to be honest. He gained ground by feuding with The Rock and Brock Lesnar, and they made sure not to push him so far above of everyone else. He only stayed in the WWE for one year, and that alone has left a bad taste in the WWE Universe’s mouth.
There have been rumors of a return from Goldberg, but after what happened years back, it may not be good for him to return to the WWE. He was involved in a real life scuffle with Chris Jericho, and has recently talked trash about the current state of the WWE. He said that he wouldn’t mind returning to the WWE, but has bad mouthed HHH, Edge, and Shawn Michaels. Remember HHH is reportedly running the shows alongside with Vince, and I think he would have a say in Goldberg’s return. What does Goldberg have to prove as a wrestler in the current state of the WWE? He should have returned to the WWE a few years back and wrestled. Goldberg is 44 years old and wouldn’t be a good opponent for The Undertaker at Wrestlemaina 27. Undertaker needs to face Wade Barrett or Drew McIntyre at Wrestlemaina 27, because we know The Undertaker will win, but he will boost the career of either wrestler (Drew or Wade) that faces him at the PPV. Wade Barrett really needs to face the Undertaker because we know that he is a great alliance leader, but needs to face The Undertaker at WM 27 to gain the respect of the WWE Universe as a singles wrestler.
