The following are my top five best video game easter eggs in 2010. WARNING: Descriptions below may contain spoilers.
5) Metal Gear Solid in Assassin’s Creed Brother
Paying homage to other video games is pretty standard, but to put ridiculous anachronisms in your game is hilarious. While running through 15th century Italy, you come upon a modern day constructed cardboard box. It’s completely out of place and an excellent homage to Snake’s tool of trade in Metal Gear Solid.
4) Billy Mitchell in Donkey Kong Country Returns
It would have been standard to add an easter egg referencing an earlier Donkey Kong game or another Nintendo game. However, Donkey Kong Country Returns references Billy Mitchell, the Donkey Kong world record holder and star of the documentary King of Kong.
3) Lost Vikings in Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
In the Cantina, you can find an arcade cabinet called the “Lost Viking”. It’s a reference to one of Blizzard’s earliest games called “The Lost Vikings”. Just putting the arcade cabinet in Starcraft II would have been a sufficient enough easter egg. However, Blizzard went above and beyond, making an entire playable space shooter in the arcade cabinet. It’s not the original Lost Vikings game though. If they could have put the original game in Starcraft II, it may have pushed this easter egg into the top 2.
2) Super Tofu Boy in Super Meat Boy
This easter egg is one of the funniest things in gaming I’ve ever read. Shortly after the hit Super Meat Boy was released, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) released a parody game called Super Tofu Boy. As you might guess, the game expounds the various wonderful qualities of being vegetarian.
The creators of Super Meat Boy couldn’t take this sitting down. They went ahead and added Super Tofu Boy into the original game as a secret character. When typing “petaphile” (get it, petaphile?) at the character select screen, you have the opportunity to play as Super Tofu Boy. Unlike the other unlockable characters in the game, Super Tofu Boy has no special abilities. He’s a completely weakened version of Super Meat Boy and even beginning levels are on the verge of impossible.
1) Zork in Call of Duty: Black Ops
It’s one of the coolest easter eggs I’ve personally seen in a game. At the main menu, you’re able to break free by pressing the left and right triggers on your controller. You’re able to access a computer with a command prompt and begin typing away. You can type DOS commands like ‘dir’ and ‘cat’ to see what files around. You can also type ‘doa’ to play a mini-game called “Dead Ops Arcade.” However, what steals the show and makes this the best easter egg of the year is the fact you can type ‘Zork’ at the command line and get the original 1970s text adventure game. Adding such a famous oldschool game into Black Ops went above and beyond what most would expect from an easter egg.
